Summer sausage lovers, are you ready for the season? I have been counting down the days, hours, and minutes ever since the start of the year. Fried summer sausage is a heavenly treat with a tender texture and smoky flavor. It’s an easy-to-make dish that can be served on any occasion – from a casual backyard party to a sophisticated gathering. Plus, it’s versatile enough to pair with almost any side or sauce.

In this guide, I’ll show you all the steps you need to make a masterpiece. You’ll learn how to fry like a pro, what to serve with it, and how to store your fried summer sausage for later. So let’s get started!

How to Fry Summer Sausage?

Cooking fried summer sausage is an easy and delicious way to eat this classic snack. This method of preparation preserves all the juices and flavors for a crunchy and juicy meal. Here’s my step-by-step guide on how to fry summer sausage:

Step 1: Preparing the Sausage

Slicing Summer Sausage

Cut the summer sausage into slices and place them into the heated oil one at a time using tongs or a spatula. I recommend slicing your summer sausage about 1/4 inch thick for even cooking and fuss-free flipping. If you find it more comfortable, use a mandoline slicer to get perfect slices every time!

Step 2: Heating the Oil and Frying the Sausage

Pan Frying Summer Sausage

Heat up the oil in the pot or skillet over medium heat until it begins to shimmer. This ensures that the outside won’t cook too quickly while leaving the inside raw.

You can use any type of cooking oil like vegetable, canola, coconut, sunflower, or olive oil. My favorite pick is definitely olive oil!

Put the sausage slices in, and fry them. Turn them over after two minutes and cook for another two minutes until all sides are crispy and golden brown.

Step 3: Serving

Use tongs to remove each piece from the pot of hot oil once they’re done cooking, and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess grease.

Once you’ve finished frying your summer sausage, you can dress it up with your favorite sauces or enjoy it as is!

Summer Sausage Served With Fried Eggs and Rye Bread

Now that you know how to fry summer sausage, it’s time to start thinking about what goes well with this delicious food. Fried summer sausage goes with just about anything, from a simple side salad to a full-on feast. Some of my favorite ways to serve it include:

  • Mashed potatoes and gravy – This classic comfort food combination never fails to please. The smoky, savory flavor of grilled summer sausage pairs perfectly with the creamy potatoes and rich gravy.
  • Sauteed vegetables – Grilled summer sausage is fantastic when served alongside sauteed vegetables. I love the combination of sweet peppers, red onions, and mushrooms, but any combination of your favorite vegetables will do just fine!
  • Use it as a topping on pizza or in a sandwich – Add a little extra oomph to your favorite recipes by adding grilled summer sausage as a topping. It’s especially delicious when paired with melted cheese – try it on top of French fries or inside a wrap!
  • Fried eggs and rye bread – Here’s an amazing breakfast idea! Perfectly fried summer sausage goes great with these, and you can always make your own loaf of fresh rye bread. Yum!

How to Store It?

Once you’ve finished cooking, you’ll have to think about storing any leftovers — and luckily, keeping your summer sausage delicious is really easy.

After you’ve taken off any remaining fat from the outside, wrap it up in wax paper or aluminum foil. If you don’t plan on serving it within a couple of days, pop it in the fridge.

When you’re ready to have more of your delicious fried summer sausage, just unwrap it and warm it up in a preheated oven for 10-15 minutes. Make sure to keep an eye on the timer so that your sausage doesn’t dry out or burn! Don’t just microwave it since this could make the outside of your summer sausage soggy and rubbery.
