I don’t know about you, but I am simply in love with casual fast-food places where you can just sit, relax, and enjoy your favorite meal wearing your sweats. Known as a casual place, Schlotzsky is all about substance, offering delicious meals with no judgment, which is why you can see smiling faces and happy people there!

As much as I would love to tell you all about everything on their menu, I cannot stick everything into a single article, so in this article, I will focus on Schlotzsky’s signature sauce.

What Is Schlotzsky’s Signature Sauce?

In a nutshell, Schlotzsky’s signature sauce is a delicious condiment that gives your food a burst of flavor, making a piece of bread taste like a fancy course. Known for its creamy and slightly tangy profile, this sauce is perfectly balanced with a zesty note, infusing it with a refreshing and a bit edgy tone.

It also features a discrete sweet note, which serves as an excellent way to balance out the rest of the flavors included in the sauce.

Schlotzsky’s signature sauce is a shapeshifter, able to elevate a wide range of dishes, which is why I appreciated it so much. Whether you’re indulging in one of their mouthwatering sandwiches, enjoying a fresh and crisp salad, or savoring a delicious wrap, this sauce adds that extra layer of flavor that takes your meal to the next level.

With its creamy and rich texture, it affects not only the taste but the consistency of the dish as well, turning your meal into a decadent and refined experience.

What Does Schlotzsky’s Signature Sauce Taste Like?

I would love to explain the Schlotzsky’s signature sauce’s taste in a single word, but unfortunately, this is a complex sauce that is impossible to describe in a simple way. Delicious doesn’t even begin to encompass the taste of this sauce. You can feel a little of everything, yet the perfectly balanced flavor combination results in a new and unique taste.

It has a creamy and slightly tangy profile, with a hint of zest and an understated sweetness, which rounds up all the included flavor notes. It has a certain depth of flavor, which you don’t get to see too often in sauces, making it even more satisfying.

The creamy consistency is the cherry on top, and I think that the flavor wouldn’t be as rich if the consistency weren’t as creamy. It elevates the sauce, adding depth and substance to it.

I would say that Schlotzsky’s signature sauce is way more than a condiment, since it genuinely alters the flavor of your meal. Although it isn’t overwhelming in terms of flavor, it has this fantastic ability to imprint on the food, making it even more delicious.

Is It Spicy?

It is not a particularly spicy sauce, which I love, but it isn’t flavorless either, so don’t worry. Those who prefer spicier flavors are more reluctant to try Schlotzsky’s signature sauce but believe me, you won’t be disappointed.

Schlotzsky’s signature sauce is more about delivering a flavorful and balanced taste with a creamy, tangy, and slightly sweet profile than dominating the dish.

While it does have a hint of zestiness, it’s not the type of sauce that will make your taste buds tingle from excessive spiciness, so don’t expect any fiery sensation. Instead, prepare for a gentle, delightful depth of flavor to your dishes, offering you a soft culinary experience.

What Dishes at Schlotzsky’s Have It?

Schlotzsky’s signature sauce is a signature sauce for a reason. It is designed specifically to go with a variety of menu items at Schlotzsky’s, so expect to encounter it in the majority of menu items.

“The Original” is Schlotzsky’s most iconic sandwich, which includes smoked ham, Genoa and cotto salamis, melted cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese, black olives, red onion, lettuce, tomato, mustard, and, of course, their Signature Sauce, all on their signature fresh-baked sourdough bun.

The Angus roast beef and cheese is for you If you’re a roast beef fan. You will definitely enjoy the juicy meat and accompanying ingredients enhanced with Schlotzsky’s signature sauce.

Another delightful option is the smoked turkey breast sandwich. Although it comes with light mayo, you can definitely pair it with the tasty Schlotzsky’s signature sauce.

The chicken Greek salad is another place where the Schlotzsky’s signature sauce fits perfectly, as well as any of their calzones

Since there are currently 598 locations, the menu may vary. Still, don’t be disappointed if you can’t find some of the above items; there will definitely be others that are equally tasty.

Can You Make this Sauce at Home?

Sure you can! You will need the mayonnaise since it serves as the foundational element of this sauce, adding a creamy and rich texture that truly elevates its overall profile. The inclusion of both yellow mustard and Dijon mustard bestows upon the sauce a unique tanginess and a certain depth of flavor.

The white vinegar plays a crucial role by enhancing the tang of the sauce. Granulated sugar, on the other hand, provides just the right touch of sweetness that perfectly counterbalances the tangy components.

It can’t go without some spices. So, use onion and garlic powder, paprika, and cayenne pepper.

Follow the provided instructions closely, and you’ll have a sauce that might just rival the original. The key is to let the sauce rest in the fridge, allowing the flavors to meld perfectly.

What to Eat It With?

Since you have it ready to serve, you can have Schlotzsky’s signature sauce with virtually anything! The beauty of this sauce lies in its versatility, which is why I have it in my fridge most of the time.

You can combine it with roast to give the meat a zesty kick and a creamy texture. Roasted, grilled, and steamed veggies are all great ideas to pair your sauce with. Cheese or cured meat platters are also very much in the game.

Sandwiches and wraps go without saying! Nothing will give them that boost of flavor like Schlotzsky’s signature sauce. Pizzas, calzones, and pastas do great when paired with this sauce, too.

Salads are yet another excellent choice to pair the Schlotzsky’s signature sauce with, as well as fried delights such as onion rings, fries, chicken wings, and many more. You can also use it as a dipping sauce for chips or fresh veggies.

Storing Tips

What I love about this sauce is that it isn’t too demanding in terms of storing. It is relatively durable, though don’t push it. It would suffice to keep it in an airtight container and store it in the fridge.

If you don’t have an appropriate container handy, you can store it in the mixing bowl in which you made it, but make sure you seal it as tightly as possible with a plastic wrap. Never keep the sauce out of the fridge for over 30 minutes. Scoop as much as you need and return the rest.

Frequent temperature changes can cause it to spoil sooner.

In general, given the right conditions, your homemade Schlotzsky’s signature sauce will be good for up to two weeks, but I suggest you check for signs of spoilage after day five because you never know.

For best results and to maintain the sauce’s quality for as long as possible, stir it before serving it. This will allow for the sauce layers to shift, balancing the temperature and consistency.

And now, my favorite part is the copycat recipe for Schlotzsky’s signature sauce. I’ve made it at home many times, and each time, it gets better, so don’t worry if you don’t get it just right the first time.

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper adjust to taste for spiciness
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, mix the mayonnaise, yellow mustard, and Dijon mustard. Stir them together until they are homogenized.
  • Add the white vinegar, granulated sugar, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, and cayenne pepper to the mixture. Mix gently but thoroughly until the ingredients are incorporated into the mixture,
  • Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper. I would advise you to sprinkle the salt and pepper lightly and gently so that you don’t overseason the mixture. If you are a fan of spicier flavors, feel free to add more paprika.
  • Once the sauce is to your liking, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and pop it in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before you serve it. It seems that many overlook this step and tend to serve the sauce right away. The refrigeration allows for the flavors to meld and the consistency to thicken, giving you a world-class condiment!

Notes

Your homemade Schlotzsky’s signature sauce will be good for up to two weeks, but never keep the sauce out of the fridge for over 30 minutes.
