A wave of food videos has been racking up eye popping view counts online this year, and one simple kitchen trick keeps rising above the rest. It has nothing to do with expensive gadgets or complicated techniques.

People are stopping mid scroll, trying it themselves, and posting their own versions within hours. Keep reading to see exactly what has everyone reaching for their freezer.

The Simple Trick Behind The Viral Craze

The trend traces back to cookbook author and food creator Frankie Gaw, who first showed off his own version online. His clip of grated frozen strawberries topped with condensed milk and crushed peanuts quickly caught fire.

Since then, home cooks everywhere have jumped in with their own takes. The concept is shockingly simple, just freeze your favorite fruit and turn it into something that looks and tastes like a snow cone.

All It Takes Is A Freezer And A Grater

There is no fancy sorbet machine or shaved ice equipment required here. A microplane or grater is really all you need to pull this off at home.

The fruit has to be washed and frozen overnight before it will grate properly. Skipping that step means it won’t shave into those light, wispy little curls people love.

Once it’s ready, you simply grate the frozen fruit straight into a bowl. Peaches, strawberries, mangos, oranges and even whole watermelon have all made appearances in people’s kitchens.

Everyone Has Their Own Spin On It

Part of the appeal is how endlessly customizable the final bowl can be. Some people keep things classic with condensed milk and nuts, while others reach for whipped cream or honey instead.

One creator’s watermelon version got dressed up with lime juice, spicy honey and flaky salt and basil for a slightly grown up twist. The clip quickly became one of the most talked about versions of the trend online.

The Trend Just Keeps Getting Bigger

What started as a sweet summer treat has since branched into surprising new territory. Food creator Eitan Bernath recently grated frozen tomatoes over burrata in a clip that raced past millions of views almost overnight.

A follow up video featuring shaved cucumbers, tomatoes and onions did just as well. It’s proof this frozen grating trick has officially outgrown fruit entirely and turned into its own category of kitchen content.

So if a bowl of fruit and a cheap kitchen grater are all it takes to blow up online, clearing some space in the freezer might be worth it. The hardest part of this whole trend is honestly just waiting for the fruit to freeze.
