How Many Lasagna Noodles Are in a Box
Share on:

Ready-made lasagna sheets are a wonderful item to have when you are short on time or opportunity. And fortunately, there are several companies in the market producing quality boxed pasta. But, before purchasing them, you may wonder how many lasagna noodles are in a box, and how many do you need to make a proper lasagna.

A box of lasagna can come in a range of shapes and sizes. So, the number of noodles in each box is equally variable. That’s why today, we are going to look at some of the most popular lasagna brands on the market and evaluate their content. We will go over different pack sizes, the number of sheets per box, and the overall quality of the product.

How Many Sheets Are in a Box of Lasagna Noodles?

A box of lasagna can contain 10-20 pieces of noodles, depending on the size of each noodle. If the sheet is large enough, you can use 2 of them per layer in your lasagna. Otherwise, you need to use 3 sheets per layer to prevent the layers of sauce from leaking into one another. So, it is safe to say that one box is enough for two to three lasagnas.

Now, let’s see how many noodles are in the boxes from different producers.

Ronzoni Lasagna

Ronzoni has 2 standard box sizes; one is 8 oz and the other is 16 oz. Each 2 oz serving requires the use of 3 sheets of pasta in both cases. So, you will get 12 pieces and 24 pieces respectively from a box of Ronzoni lasagna.

Now, the 8 oz box is oven-ready, meaning you will save a lot of time not having to pre-cook the pasta. The 16 oz box contains dry lasagna sheets. So you will have to cook them in boiling water to help them moisten up.

Like Barilla, they also have a whole grain option, which is in a 12 oz pack. A single pack of this lasagna will fetch you 18 pieces of noodles.

Barilla Pasta

Starting this list off we have Barilla’s famous wavy pasta sheets. The standard Barilla lasagna box contains 18 sheets of pasta. The box specifies that you can use 2 sheets per serving but that choice is entirely up to you.

Barilla also sells oven-ready pasta sheets. A single box of this weighs about 9 oz and contains 15 sheets of lasagna. The sheets here are smaller than the basic Barilla pasta sheets. So, you will likely need 3 sheets of pasta for each layer in your lasagna. So, you can make a 5-layer lasagna if you wish.

They also have a gluten-free version of this.

Another variety from the company is their whole-grain lasagna sheets. These come in a 13.25 oz box that contains 14 sheets.

Jovial Lasagna

Jovial brown rice lasagna noodles come in a 9 oz pack. Each pack contains 10 noodles to make a 3-layer lasagna dish in a smaller pan. it is devoid of gluten as well as other potentially allergic ingredients such as soy, milk, nuts, wheat, etc.

Great Value Lasagna Pasta

Great Value offers several lasagna boxes of different sizes. They have a 16 oz, dry pasta box that contains 18 sheets of pasta.

They also have a 12 oz box of oven-ready pasta that houses 14 sheets of noodles. Each serving requires about 2 sheets of their pasta, according to the box. But if you have a wider dish, you can apply 3 or 4 sheets per layer.

Golden Grain Lasagna Noodles

A pack of Golden Grain lasagna boxes will contain 16 pieces of noodles. The noodles are big enough so you will need 2 per layer. So, you can make a total of 8 servings with a single box.

Tuscanini Oven Ready Lasagna

Tuscanini’s lasagna noodles are made out of premium durum wheat. A single box of pasta will contain 18 sheets of noodles, each of them being about 4” × 7”. So, you can use 2 sheets per layer in a 9” × 13” dish.

Palmini Low Carb Lasagna

Moving on to a more unconventional choice, we have Palmini’s low-carb lasagna sheets. You will be surprised to learn that these pasta noodles are not made in the traditional way. This is, in fact, a pasta substitute made from a plant known as the “heart of palm”. These sheets are 100% gluten-free and vegan friendly.

A can of Palmini’s low-carb lasagna will contain 24 small faux pasta sheets. Like many canned goods, these sheets are submerged in water. So, you will need to drain them properly first.

While the resemblance to actual pasta is undeniable, this pasta alternative will not replicate the taste 100%. But for people looking to cut down on carbs while still enjoying a lasagna dish, this is the ideal choice.

DeLallo Organic Whole Wheat Lasagna Noodles

DeLallo’s whole wheat lasagna noodles come in a 9 oz box, containing 15 sheets of noodles. This will give you about 4.5 servings in total.  DeLallo’s pasta is also oven-ready and comes from the finest durum wheat semolina.

Reggano Oven-Ready Lasagna Noodles

Reggano’s oven-ready pasta contains 12 sheets of noodles in one box. You can use 3 noodles per layer to get a nice and compact lasagna.

Goya Oven-Ready Lasagna

A pack of Goya oven-ready lasagna is nearly 18 oz and contains enough noodles to make 7 servings.

How Many Layers of Noodles Are in a Lasagna?

Typically, you are going to add one layer of noodles for each layer in the lasagna. So, if you are making a 3-layer lasagna, you will need to put 3 layers of noodles. The number depends entirely on how many layers you desire.

How to Layer Lasagna?

To make a proper lasagna dish, you add a layer of sauce to the bottom of the dish. This will prevent the dish from sticking to the pan and making a mess. Then add a layer of lasagna noodles. Make sure you overlap the edges of adjacent noodles so that the sauce does not spill out.

Now you can add a layer of bechamel sauce. Next comes bolognese sauce and cheese.

Repeat this process until you have your desired number of layers. Technically, you need at least 2 layers for the dish to qualify as a lasagna. But most people choose to make their dish with at least 3 layers.

Once you get to the top, garnish it with some more cheese and put the dish in the oven. Bake the pasta for about 30 minutes.

How Many Layers Should Lasagna Have

How Many Lasagna Noodles Per Layer Do You Need?

This will depend on the size of each noodle. Different brands cut their pasta in different dimensions. The pasta from Barilla or Ronzoni measures about 2.57 x 10.82 x 4.07 Inches. This means you can make a layer of lasagna with just two noodles.

But with shorter noodles, you need at least 3. This way you can have the edges of the pasta overlap each other. This will prevent the sauce or other layers from spilling over when the lasagna is baking in the oven. Whether you go for the wavy design or the flat pasta, it is completely up to your preference.

What Are the Best Lasagna Noodles?

When it comes to boxed lasagna noodles, oven-ready sheets are always the superior choice. Ready-made pasta is all about convenience and the time it saves you. So, not having to do that one extra step of pre-cooking your lasagna noodles is a big bonus.

In this regard, Barilla and Ronzoni make the most appealing traditional pasta. They even have a variation with a wavy appearance, which adds to the overall aesthetics of the dish.

Great Value’s oven-ready pasta sheets are also not far behind in terms of quality.

But if you are looking for a vegan-friendly, low carb, and completely gluten-free option, you should try Palmini Low Carb Lasagna. As far as substitutes for classic lasagna pasta goes, this product stands above the rest.
