So, you’re thinking about cooking with your kids. Brave, ambitious soul! If you’re like me, your kitchen is already a battlefield most days, and tossing kids into the mix can feel like you’re asking for double trouble. But—and hear me out—getting little ones involved doesn’t have to mean total chaos (just some light flour-dusting of every surface, including yourself). Here are five ways to make cooking together a blast—without losing your mind. Let’s dive in!

Pajama Party Chef-Off: Because, Why Not?

Who says PJs are only for bed? Nothing says “cozy kitchen vibes” like whipping up breakfast-for-dinner in your favorite pajamas! This is the perfect excuse to skip the “getting dressed” battle and, instead, go for a “pajama cooking party.” Slap on some aprons, and you’re ready to cook up a storm!

My kid has some fleece pajama pants that are super comfy and loves to wear, so on “pancake night,” we all dress up in jams. Not only does it keep the stress low, but it also lets everyone chill (and who doesn’t want breakfast in their bedtime clothes?). Plus, no one’s allowed to argue in pajamas—house rule!

“Build-Your-Own” Station: DIY Pizza Edition

If there’s one thing kids love, it’s having a choice in, well, everything. Embrace it by setting up a build-your-own meal station—pizzas, tacos, sandwiches, you name it! Spread out options like cheese, tomatoes, pepperoni, spinach (for the adventurous) and let them pile on their favorites. My kid once tried to put apples on a pizza, and yes, we went with it.

These stations are like a little buffet for them, and somehow, they’re way more likely to actually eat what they make. Added bonus: they’ll try new things without you having to sneak in spinach like a spy.

Themed Cooking Adventures: Time to Make Magic!

You know those days when you want a little extra excitement in the house? Say hello to “themed cooking day.” Pick a wild theme—whether it’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” or “Space Adventures”—and let the snacks follow suit. For a “Space Adventure” day, we made planet-shaped cookies and sprinkled them with edible glitter (or “stardust,” as we call it).

My little one loves sea creatures, so our “Under the Sea” lunch had octopus-shaped hot dogs with a side of “sand” (crumbled crackers). Go big on storytelling, throw in a fun accent, and let the kids feel like they’re on an adventure in their very own kitchen.

Kitchen Science 101: Science Fair Vibes

Cooking is basically science with a tasty prize at the end! Show them how baking soda and vinegar do that awesome fizz, or let them witness the wonder of yeast making dough rise. We have a “science session” every few weeks where I let my little one mix all sorts of safe ingredients and marvel at what they do.

Spoiler alert: pancakes are a favorite because the batter bubbles up, and it’s like watching magic. Lab coats optional (or just tie a towel around your kid’s shoulders—they’ll feel like a scientist with a cape!).

Taste Test Challenge: Become the Family’s Official Food Critic

Here’s a trick to get your kiddos to taste new things: make a game out of it. After cooking, turn your dining table into a judging panel, complete with a “taste test challenge.” Grab some paper, make quick “scorecards” with smiley faces, stars, or “yucks” and “yums.”

Each person rates the dishes—did they like the texture? Could it use more salt? You’d be surprised at how opinionated they get and how many foods they’ll actually try this way! My kid once said, “Hmm, needs more zing,” and I’m not even sure where he got that, but we were proud critics for the night!
