Are Funyuns Discontinued? No! Here’s Where to Find Them

Have you noticed that there are fewer and fewer Funyuns snacks at the supermarkets? The question has been raised everywhere. There was a thread on Reddit about it and people used Twitter to express their deep sadness over the possibility that Funyuns might be discontinued. Funyuns assured that they were just playing a hide-and-seek game and that they are here to stay. What is the truth, then? Are Funyuns Discontinued?

Funyuns are not discontinued. You can still find the original Onion Flavored Rings and the Flamin’ Hot Onion Flavored Rings in supermarkets, online, and in some vending machines around the US.

Recent years have indeed seen a shortage of these snacks around the country. This raised concerns among fans, especially because different Funyuns flavor editions have been launched and then discontinued over the years. There is a good reason why people start feeling that there is a shortage of these corn snacks. Let me tell you all about it below.

Which Funyuns Are Discontinued?

Funyuns could only be found in its original Onion Flavored Rings for their first thirty-two years of existence. But over the years, the company decided to create alternative flavors for their much-loved onion-shaped corn snacks.

In 2001 the first flavor was launched: Wasabi. With just a small hint of wasabi, the Wasabi Funyuns edition was not as punchy as the brand advertised and was discontinued one year after it first appeared on the shelves.

In 2007 the world met Flamin’ Hot flavored Funyuns, and they were such a crowd pleaser that they are still on sale to this day. Promised to “set your mouth on fire” the Flamin’ Hot Funyuns are just a spicy version of the original onion-flavored corn snack.

Seven years later, in 2014, Funyuns introduced the Chili & Límon flavor. Combining the spicy kick of chili peppers and the citron acidity of limes, these snacks were on the market for four years before they were discontinued. Some say they were very similar to the Flamin’ Hot edition as the lime flavor was very light and easily undetected.

From 2015 to 2018, Funyuns presented their fans with one more original flavor: Steakhouse Onion. Advertised as having a steakhouse onion dip flavor, these snacks tasted of garlic, tomato, sour cream, and buttermilk on top of the familiar onion flavor.

Currently, only original Funyuns and Flamin’ Hot Funyuns can be found in some supermarkets and vending machines. What is more, PepsiCo has no intention of making these two flavors disappear like the others.

Predicting a continuous demand increase, the company announced in 2021 that they would invest $200 million in their Texas plant to add two new manufacturing lines to produce Funyuns and tortilla chips. Long story short, even though some Funyuns flavors have been discontinued, the corn snakes are here to stay.

Is There a Funyuns Shortage?

In some way, there is indeed a Funyuns shortage and the answer for that is simple: demand for snacks increased, and, at the same time, the world was faced with unprecedented production problems (the pandemic affected the production and supply lines of many other foods and non-food related products). That gave the impression that Funyuns were disappearing forever, and raised the question of whether Funyuns are discontinued.

There might be, at some stores, a shortage of Funyuns, but they still exist and the best place to find them is online. Amazon, Sam’s Club, Walmart, and Instacart all have Funyuns in stock that you can order directly to your front step. Can it get better than that?

What Are Some Funyuns Alternatives?

Even though they have the shape of an onion ring, there is not an actual onion in the Funyuns. The dough includes some onion powder and toasted onion flavor (whatever that is). But, in the end, Funyuns is just an onion-flavored cornmeal snack that has been shaped to resemble an onion ring.

Do you know where there is also no onion to be seen? On Wise Onion Rings! Just like Funyuns, they are onion-flavored rings, making them the perfect alternative in case you cannot find Funyuns at your local supermarket.

Munchos Flamin’ Hot Potato Crisps, made of fried dehydrated potatoes are a crisp snack with a chili flavor and a tongue-tingling effect. Together with Takis, the corn tortilla chips with a spicy intense flavor make interesting additions to the list of Funyuns alternatives. And so do Fritos, another corn chip snack.

If you prefer cornmeal snacks, with a “melt-in-your-mouth” texture, then Cheetos is also a good alternative. The cheesy, crunchy orange puffs are one of the top snacks in the US and have been around for over fifty years.

On that note, 100% plant-based alternative is the PeaTos Crunchy Classic Onion Rings made with peas, lentils, and fava beans
