Walk into pretty much any grocery store right now and you will spot a very specific soda hogging way more shelf space than it used to. It comes in pastel cans, fizzes just like the classic stuff, and has somehow convinced people that soda can be good for their gut.

This fizzy obsession has quietly turned into one of the biggest rivalries in the beverage aisle. Keep reading, because there is way more drama behind this can than you would expect.

The Drink That Basically Invented A Whole Category

The trend everyone is talking about is prebiotic soda, led by two rival brands called Olipop and Poppi. Both promise the same wild idea, a can of pop that might actually help your digestion instead of wrecking it.

The Fiber Gap That Actually Matters

Not all prebiotic sodas are created equal, and the difference comes down to fiber. Olipop packs nine grams of fiber per can, while Poppi only has about two.

One Brand Got Sued Over It

That gap became a legal problem for Poppi, which faced a class action lawsuit after customers argued its gut health claims did not match its actual fiber content. Olipop has avoided that kind of backlash so far, likely because its numbers hold up better.

Taste Testers Can’t Stop Ranking It

Food publications have turned this into a full blown sport, crowning Olipop the winner after sampling more than fifty flavors across ten different brands. Retro flavors like Root Beer and Cream Soda reportedly taste almost identical to the classics they are replacing.

Celebrities And Cartoons Helped It Go Viral

Both brands leaned hard into pop culture, teaming up with everything from ‘Barbie’ to ‘SpongeBob’ to the Los Angeles Lakers. Those partnerships turned a niche health food item into something people now casually toss into their cart at Target.

Even Coca-Cola Wants In Now

The category grew so fast that Coca-Cola launched its own version called Simply Pop, and Olipop founder Ben Goodwin has said the moment proves the soda category has officially gone mainstream. That is a pretty big deal for a drink that started out looking like a health food store experiment.

At this point, prebiotic soda is not just a fad sitting quietly on a wellness influencer’s counter. It has turned into a genuine grocery store rivalry, complete with lawsuits, celebrity tie ins and a multi billion dollar price tag. Whether or not it actually transforms your gut, it has definitely transformed the soda aisle.
