I can’t think of a better way to sweeten up your day. Try making these cinnamon rolls for your next special occasion, and watch your friends and family be delighted! This is what you’ll need before you start:

To prepare a home-made dough, you will need 3 cups (380 grams) all-purpose flour, 1/3 cup (65 grams) granulated sugar, ½ tsp salt, ¾ cup (180 ml) warm whole milk, 3 tbsp (50 grams) unsalted butter, a packet active dry yeast (7 grams, ¼ oz, or 2¼ tsp), and 1 beaten egg

Now, for the apple pie filling, you will need 5 big sweet apples (such as Gala, Honeycrisp, or Fuji), the stars of the recipe, then, of course, 2 tbsp cinnamon, 1 tbsp brown sugar, plus 1/4 cup brown sugar for filling the rolls, and 3 tbsp (50 grams) softened butter.

Lastly, you will need 3 tbsp powdered sugar for the delicious topping!

You can make around 16 delicious apple-filled cinnamon rolls with all these ingredients.

Now, let’s get cooking!

Step 1: Kneading the Dough

Before you start, you will need to leave the butter at room temperature for some time to soften. You will need 3 tbsp for spreading it across the rolled dough and 3 tbsp for putting them into the dough.

To prepare the dough, you will need to put the butter in the milk and slowly heat the milk enough for the butter to melt, using medium-high heat. Be careful not to overheat the milk, or else the dough will not rise.

Mix all of the dry ingredients together, and then pour the milk and butter into them. Aff 1 beaten egg and knead everything into a nice, smooth dough.

Leave the dough to rise for at least an hour by covering it with cling foil so it won’t dry.

Step 2: Making the Apple Pie Filling

While you are waiting for the dough to rise, you need to peel and grate the apples. Put 1 tbsp sugar and 2 tbsp of cinnamon, mix everything nicely together and then leave them for half an hour for the apples to release the water.

After that, press out the apples to squeeze the excess water from them, or else the dough will become mushy.

Turn the oven to 350 °F (180 °C) and move on to the next step.

Step 3: Filling Up and Baking the Rolls

Slightly oil the work surface and roll out the dough that should be 0.15 inches (about 0.4 cm), thin, and around a 17×8-inch (43×20 cm) rectangle.

Spread the butter across the dough, but make sure it is only softened but not melted. Sprinkle 1/4 cup brown sugar and then fill it with apples.

Start rolling from one of the longer sides. As you get closer to completing your roll, make sure to bring the sides in so there are no open gaps for the filling to seep out during baking. Cut 16 equal pieces, and place them onto the baking paper you placed into the casserole. Make sure you leave space between them because they will rise more during the baking.

Leave them for 10 minutes at room temperature and then put them into the oven for 24-26 minutes, or until they turn brownish.

Once they are done, leave them to cool for at least 20 minutes, and then sprinkle the powdered sugar on top of them. Enjoy!

What to Serve with Cinnamon Rolls with Apple Pie Filling?

My apple pie-filled cinnamon rolls are so flavorful I almost don’t need to serve anything alongside them. But if you want to turn them into a full-on breakfast experience, a few things pair incredibly well with the warm spiced sweetness.

First, a cup of hot coffee or tea can bring out the flavors in the dough and filling even more while adding an excellent complement to the sweetness. Or, a dollop of homemade whipped cream or cream cheese frosting offers an indulgent contrast to all that spice.
