For decades, breakfast for a lot of women meant coffee, maybe a slice of toast, and calling it a day before lunch even showed up.

Dietitians are now noticing a quiet but real shift, especially among women in their 60s, who are rebuilding their mornings around something that used to barely make the plate.

Here’s what’s actually changing, and why so many women are making the switch.

The Old Morning Routine Wasn’t Working

Nutritionists have pointed out that a lot of women fall into the same pattern, a light breakfast, a thin lunch and a heavy dinner that leaves them snacking late into the night.

That pattern becomes more of a problem with age, since about half of women over 71 aren’t getting enough protein at all according to federal dietary guidelines.

Protein Finally Gets the Morning Spot

Eggs, Greek yogurt, and nut butters are showing up on breakfast plates more often, since dietitians now recommend aiming for 20 to 30 grams of protein at each meal to help maintain muscle as the body ages.

That shift matters because muscle mass declines more rapidly once women reach their 60s, which slows the rate at which the body burns calories in the first place.

When You Eat Protein Matters Almost as Much

Spreading protein evenly across the day works better than loading up at dinner, since the body can only process protein efficiently in moderate doses rather than all at once.

Skipping Breakfast Is Falling Out of Favor

Fasting through the morning used to be a common weight loss trick, but plenty of nutritionists now advise against skipping breakfast entirely once hormonal shifts make blood sugar harder to keep steady.

None of this requires a dramatic diet overhaul. Swapping toast for eggs, or cereal for Greek yogurt with berries, is usually enough to start feeling the difference.
