Ricky Gervais has built an entire public persona around saying exactly what he thinks, regardless of who it upsets, and that same stubborn streak shows up clearly in how he talks about food. He has spent years publicly resisting the idea that anyone else gets to decide what or when he eats.

That does not mean his actual diet has stayed frozen in place, since it has shifted dramatically over the past several years. The real philosophy running through all of it is less about the specific food and more about who gets to make that call.

None of it followed outside pressure or a trend. Here is why Ricky Gervais refuses to change his eating philosophy for anyone else, even while quietly changing plenty on his own terms.

He Once Refused To Diet Just Because A Host Pointed It Out

In a 2017 appearance meant to promote his Netflix film David Brent: Life on the Road, Jimmy Fallon instead steered the conversation toward the weight Gervais had visibly put on. Gervais made clear on air that he had no interest in giving up eating or drinking simply because someone else brought it up.

That response fit a broader pattern that has followed him for years, treating his own body and habits as nobody else’s business to comment on. Being asked about his weight in a public interview did not translate into any immediate lifestyle overhaul.

His Actual Diet Changed, Just Never On Anyone Else’s Schedule

Gervais eventually did overhaul how he eats, but the shift toward vegetarianism and then full veganism unfolded gradually, entirely at his own pace. He has described finding it fairly easy specifically because he took it slowly, cutting out eggs first and cheese much later, on his podcast appearance in 2026 with fellow comedian Romesh Ranganathan.

He publicly confirmed being vegan on The Tonight Show, delivered with his usual dry, understated humor rather than any grand announcement. That reveal came years into a private habit he had never felt obligated to broadcast or explain to anyone until he was ready to.

The Real Philosophy Is About Refusing To Be Told What To Do

During the early pandemic, Gervais specifically called out celebrities for lecturing the public while quietly admitting he had personally started eating better and drinking slightly less himself. “People are just a bit tired of being lectured to,” he said, criticizing the impulse to publicly perform self improvement for an audience.

That contrast captures his entire approach in one moment, genuinely changing his own habits while refusing to let anyone frame it as a lesson for others to follow. Whatever ends up on his plate, the decision has always stayed entirely his own.

Ricky Gervais was never really refusing to change, he was refusing to let someone else decide when or why. His vegan diet today looks nothing like the guy who brushed off Jimmy Fallon in 2017, proof that the only pressure he has ever actually responded to is his own.
