Why Nutritionists Say Most Women Aren’t Eating Enough of This

You order a salad for lunch and the server asks if you want to add protein. You pause, then say no, figuring the greens alone will do the trick.
That tiny hesitation happens to women everywhere, and it points to something bigger. There is one thing missing from a lot of plates, and it might be exactly what your body has been asking for.
The Missing Piece On Every Plate
That missing piece turns out to be protein, and dietitians say women underestimate it more than almost anything else on the plate. One woman described her typical day as yogurt for breakfast and yogurt again for dinner, landing her around 25 to 30 grams total.
Registered dietitian Rachael DeVaux says most women are only getting somewhere around 50 to 60 grams of protein a day. Her own recommendation sits closer to 100 grams daily for anyone staying active. Once the shift happens, she says it feels “like a light switch.”
How Much You Actually Need
Protein supports muscle, hormone balance, metabolism, and even skin and hair, which is why hitting the bare minimum still might not be enough. Most women should aim for 20 to 30 grams at every single meal, roughly the size of your palm.
A wider guideline suggests women aim for 1.2 to 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. Women are also more likely than men to fall short of that number.
Why It Matters As Time Goes On
Muscle naturally starts to fade over the years, and protein becomes one of the easiest ways to fight back. Aiming for around 25 to 30 grams at each meal can help preserve strength for the long haul.
Skipping out on protein does not just show up on a scale somewhere down the line. It can quietly chip away at energy, strength, and bone health without much warning.
An Easy Fix Anyone Can Try
The good news is nobody needs a dramatic diet overhaul to catch up. Adding an egg, a scoop of Greek yogurt, or some grilled chicken to meals already on the table can close the gap fast.
So the next time someone asks if you want protein with that salad, it might be worth saying yes. Your energy, your strength, and your glow later on will probably thank you for it.
