Why Everyone Is Suddenly Drinking This “Healthy” Beverage

Grocery store beverage aisles have quietly turned into something closer to a wellness clinic than a soda fridge. One specific category has driven a huge share of that shift, and it looks almost identical to the soda it is replacing.

The drink promises a benefit soda has never delivered, support for gut health, while still tasting close enough to the real thing to satisfy an actual soda craving. That combination has turned it into one of the fastest growing categories in the entire beverage industry.

None of it happened by accident, and the growth numbers are genuinely striking. Here is why prebiotic soda has suddenly taken over so many refrigerators.

A Soda That Promises To Help Your Gut, Not Hurt It

Prebiotic sodas, led by brands like Olipop and Poppi, are built around fiber and plant based ingredients meant to support digestive health rather than just deliver sugar and carbonation. Olipop cans typically carry around 9 grams of fiber, according to Verity Rank, while still offering the familiar fizzy, nostalgic flavors people already associate with soda.

The category is projected to keep growing sharply through 2026, part of a broader functional beverage market expected to reach as much as 70 billion dollars this year, according to Sourceready. Prebiotic and probiotic sodas specifically are experiencing some of the highest growth of any beverage category tracked.

One Company Turned It Into A Cultural Moment

Poppi’s rise traces back to a breakout moment on Shark Tank, after which the brand leaned hard into bold branding and social media rather than traditional advertising, according to Forbes. Its apple cider vinegar based formula helped turn a once niche wellness ingredient into something genuinely mainstream.

Olipop took a slightly different approach, leaning on nostalgic, familiar flavors paired with prebiotic fiber to make gut health feel indulgent rather than clinical. Both brands managed to make a health forward pitch feel like a treat instead of a chore.

Big Beverage Companies Noticed Fast

The major players in the beverage industry moved quickly once the category proved itself. PepsiCo completed a deal to acquire Poppi, according to Food Ingredients First, while competitors have raced to launch their own prebiotic and probiotic sodas rather than risk losing shelf space entirely.

That kind of rapid acquisition is usually a clear signal a trend has real staying power rather than just a passing social media moment. For now, prebiotic soda looks less like a fad and more like a genuine, permanent shift in what a soda aisle actually contains.

None of this means prebiotic soda is a miracle health drink, and the science on how much fiber from a can actually helps digestion is still developing. Still, for anyone missing regular soda, it is easy to see why a version that at least tries to do something for the gut has taken over so fast.
