Carrie Underwood has built a big part of her public persona around clean living, and her plant based diet is one of the pieces fans ask about most. What is less talked about is how hard she has worked to bring the rest of her household along with her.

Between a husband who loves steak and two young sons with their own opinions about dinner, getting everyone at the table to eat more like she does has turned into something of a long running project. Here is where that mission actually started, and why she has not given up on it.

A Farm Kid Who Fell in Love With Her Cows

Underwood grew up on a cattle farm in Checotah, Oklahoma, surrounded by animals she adored long before she understood what the farm was actually for. “Our calves were always adorable,” she wrote in her book, recalling how sweet and playful they were.

At 13, she finally connected the dots about where the meat on her plate came from, and she made the decision on the spot to stop eating beef for good. That choice eventually grew into a full vegetarian lifestyle, one that later earned her the title of PETA’s sexiest vegetarian not once but twice.

Home Life Is Complicated When One Parent Still Loves Steak

Her husband, former NHL player Mike Fisher, has never made the switch, and the two have reportedly worked out a system where he handles his own meat. On The Rachael Ray Show, Underwood explained that she happily cooks all the vegetables and sides, but if Fisher wants meat on his plate, he is on his own to make it.

That divide shows up in unexpected ways around the house too. Underwood has shared that she pressure cans meat at home specifically so the family is ready whenever the boys want tacos, a small sign that dinner at the Underwood household is still very much a mixed bag.

Why She Keeps Pushing Anyway

Despite the pushback at home, Underwood reportedly has not eased up on encouraging her sons to eat more vegetables and plant based meals. Sources close to the family describe her as very particular about what lands on her boys’ plates, even as her husband stays firmly on the meat loving side of the table.

For Underwood, the effort seems less about controlling every meal and more about the values she has held onto since she was a teenager on that farm.

Whether or not the rest of the family ever fully comes around, she has made it clear that plant based eating is not a phase she plans on dropping anytime soon.

At the end of the day, the Underwood household sounds a lot like plenty of real families figuring out how to feed picky eaters and stubborn parents alike.

Carrie may not have converted everyone just yet, but given how long she has stuck with it herself, it is a safe bet she is not backing down.
