Sonic sauces include regular mayonnaise, mustard, and ketchup, their famous Sonic Signature Sauce, BBQ Sauce, Honey Mustard Sauce, Ranch, Marinara, Signature Cheese Sauce, Picante, the Sonic Crave Sauce, Fry Sauce, Cream Cheese Frosting and maple-flavored Syrup dipping.
If you are a sauce lover then this article is for you! Below I’ll share the most well-known sauces available at Sonic, what they taste like, and the best meal-sauce pairings on the menu.
What Sauces does Sonic Have & What They Taste Like?
From condiments to dipping sauces, it is impossible not to fall in love with at least one of Sonic’s sauces. On the list below, you’ll find some information about each one of the sauces you can find on Sonic’s menu, how they taste like, what ingredients they have, and what are the best sauce pairings.
Just be aware that the number of sauces available at a Sonic Drive-In will vary between locations and not all sauces can be ordered as dipping sauces, as some will only come with your meal. I hope you enjoy it.
Sonic Signature Sauce
Sonic Signature Sauce was first introduced to Sonic’s menu in 2018 and it is perfect to go on top of one of their burgers or as a dipping sauce for their crispy chicken tenders or their corndogs. Smoky, sweet, and savory, this delicious yellow/orange creamy sauce mixes Sonic’s BBQ and Honey Mustard sauces to perfection.
Sonic Honey Mustard
One of the most popular dipping sauces at Sonic is the Honey Mustard. As the name says, it is a combination of honey and mustard. In this specific case, we are talking about Dijon mustard. The honey makes this dipping sauce a little bit sweet, but not too sweet.
The Sonic Honey Mustard can be paired with almost anything from the menu, but if I had to choose, I’d either order it with their Jumbo Popcorn Chicken or as a dressing for one of the salads.
BBQ Sauce
Probably one of the best sauces on Sonic’s menu, their BBQ Sauce is smoky and sweet and goes perfectly with mostly anything from the menu. I’d say the best pairings are their French Fries, all chicken deep-fried options (from the popcorn to the tenders) and their Crispy Tender Dinner Combo box.
In this sauce, you will feel the salt and vinegar and all the goodness there is in a perfect BBQ sauce. It is so good that I’d like to order extra packets to drizzle over some ribs before grilling them on our barbecue back at home.
Ranch Dressing
The classic Ranch Dressing couldn’t be left out of Sonic’s dipping sauce menu. It is a smooth and creamy sauce that will go well with their Ched ‘R’ Peppers, their recently returned Broccoli Cheddar Tots, or, the most consensual, the Chicken Wrap.
Like any good Ranch Sauce, the Sonic’s one gets its creaminess from the buttermilk. Buttermilk is mixed with herbs, onion, garlic, and a good pinch of black pepper.
I noticed that it’s very similar to Wingstop’s ranch sauce. If you don’t believe me, try out the Wingstop ranch recipe at Recipefairy. You will be amazed!
Signature Cheese Sauce
If you are a pretzel lover, you must try Sonic’s Soft Pretzel Twist. Even though the pretzel on its own is something from another world, it is Sonic’s Signature Cheese Sauce on the side that takes it to the next level of greatness. This is a super creamy, soft, cheesy sauce and one of the customers’ favorite sauces.
Besides the Pretzel Twist, this sauce combines well with their Chili Cheese Tots (because there can never be too much cheese) or with their French Fries if you can request a packet (it might only be available with the Pretzel Twist, though).
Marinara Sauce
Sonic’s Marinara Sauce is just a plain marinara sauce. But, most of the time, you can only get it when you ask for a specific item from their menu. A packet of this Marinara Sauce adds a little extra flavor to Sonic’s delicious, “crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside” Mozzarella Sticks.
Picante Sauce
In case you don’t know, Picante means spicy which is a very good introduction to what this Picante Sauce is all about.
Even though it is not available at every Sonic’s Drive-In, this creamy, spicy sauce is the perfect pairing with anything from their menu. A packet of this Picante Sauce is heaven on earth for spice lovers. It gives an extra kick to your everyday burger, as a topping for your cheese tots or your jumbo popcorn chicken.
Sonic Crave Sauce
Not available for order, the Sonic Crave Sauce is normally found on their signature Cheeseburgers and it gives them that extra flavor that makes Sonic burgers so delicious.
The not-so-secret sauce is the perfect marriage between mayonnaise, ketchup, relish or chopped pickles, chili sauce, sugar, paprika, and onion powder. It perfectly pairs with Sonic’s sandwiches, wraps, or salads for extra flavor.
Fry Sauce
Simple but glorious could be the two words that describe Sonic’s Fry Sauce. Made by mixing an equal quantity of ketchup and mayonnaise, the Fry Sauce goes deliciously with Sonic’s fries or tots. Seen by many as the “ultimate” dipping sauce, Fry Sauce is not available in all Sonic locations.
Ketchup, Mustard, and Mayonnaise
Sonic has the option to add basic condiments like ketchup, mustard, or mayo to your order. Even when you are buying something from the dessert list. But don’t they say that McDonald’s French Fries are better when dipped in their sundae?
Produced by Heinz for Sonic, you can never go wrong with either one of these three condiments as a dipping sauce for your meal.
Ketchup packets can be ordered at no extra cost at any one of the Sonic’s Drive-Ins, and it goes best with their corndogs or fries (regardless if they are the regular fries, the cheese fries, or the chili cheese fries).
Mustard is a must-have on any hotdog, so that is the best pairing on the menu. Make sure you request an extra packet of Heinz Mustard next time you order a hotdog at Sonic.
Heinz Mayonnaise packets can also be added to your order. This creamy sauce goes well with salads (if you are not adventurous enough to go with the ranch or the honey mustard sauces), or with a crispy tender dinner combo box to add a little freshness to a deep-fried meal.
Cream Cheese Frosting
Sonic Cream Cheese Frosting is exactly that, a Cream Cheese Frosting. Made with cream cheese and lots of sugar, this topping is the perfect pairing for Sonic’s Cinnasnacks, which are bite-size pastries with a cinnamon roll filling. The Cinnasnacks are served warm and crispy and the topping gives it that magical finishing touch you didn’t know you needed.
Syrup
On the breakfast menu at Sonic, you will find their French Toast Sticks. They are served warm with a packet of thick and rich maple-flavored syrup for dipping. People say that the French Toast Sticks are a delicious snack you can have at any time of the day, but that it is the dipping syrup sauce that takes these sweet pieces of fried bread into a whole new world of bliss.
Seasonal Sauces
Sonic is known for adding seasonal and regional sauce options to their menu, and here are some examples:
– Garlic Parmesan, a smooth Italian sauce that would be perfectly paired with their tots
– Extreme Habanero Heat, a next-level spicy sauce for those who think their Picante is not enough.
– Buffalo is a mix of cayenne pepper, red chili flakes, and chipotle. It is sold as a topping for their Jumbo Popcorn Chicken.
– Asian Sweet Chili is exactly what the name says, a sweet and savory hot sauce made with soy sauce, lemongrass, and red pepper flake.
What Is the Most Popular Sonic Sauce?
Sonic’s BBQ Sauce is their most popular sauce of all time, followed by their Honey Mustard and Ranch Sauces.
The smokiness and sweetness of Sonic’s BBQ Sauce has made it an all-time favorite among the customers. This BBQ Sauce is, to this day, Sonic’s best-seller sauce all around the US.
