Few people on the planet have had a more talked-about body than Arnold Schwarzenegger. The man who turned bodybuilding into a global obsession, then somehow also became an action legend and a state governor, has always been larger than life. But his plate these days? It looks nothing like what built those famous biceps — and the story behind the change is actually worth knowing.

The Diet That Built a Legend

During his Mr. Olympia years, Just Healthy reports Schwarzenegger built his physique by following a high-protein, well-balanced diet with smart meal timing, eating five to six times a day with plenty of protein to fuel muscle growth and recovery. The rule he lived by was simple and demanding.

According to Bodybuilding Bros, he aimed for one gram of protein per pound of bodyweight, which at 250 pounds meant 250 grams of protein every single day.

Man of Many notes he went heavy on saturated fats too, eating red meat, eggs, and bacon, with a daily caloric intake totalling around 3,825 calories, which he burned through at the gym. And yes, even the Terminator had his weak moments. He incorporated a cheat meal on Sundays, reaching for a cheeseburger with fries or a slice of pizza.

The Quiet but Radical Shift

What happened next is the part people don’t always see coming. Veg Out Mag reports that after his doctors advised him to cut back on meat to manage rising cholesterol and blood pressure, Schwarzenegger eventually cut his meat intake by roughly 80% compared to his old diet.

Despite now following a 70% plant-based diet, Fitness Volt reports he prioritizes eggs, legumes, fish, and plenty of fruits and vegetables to meet his protein and fiber needs. His daily routine now includes whole eggs, protein shakes, lots of oats, fruits and vegetables, and almond milk, as detailed by NAD. As for cow’s milk, he has made his feelings very clear.

The Shake With a Surprise Ingredient

His go-to protein shake has become something of a cult favorite. The recipe includes protein powder, cherry juice, almond milk, banana, and a raw, unpeeled egg, as Business Insider once reported.

And sometimes, ever the character, Arnold spikes it with a splash of tequila or schnapps, a little personal twist he jokingly revealed to fans, according to Veg Out Mag. It is the most Austrian thing imaginable, and somehow it works.

He Still Lets Himself Live

For all his discipline, Schwarzenegger has never pretended to be a saint at the dinner table. He admits that every so often he lets loose with a steak, schnitzel, or a hamburger, but notes that it does not set him back because he eats well most of the time, as T3 reported. When he visits Europe, Tasting Table reports he enjoys traditional wiener schnitzel, authentic German potato salad, and Italian and Spanish pastas.

And there is one place in Ohio he keeps coming back to. At Schmidt’s Sausage Haus, he has long been a fan of the buffet, and when it was temporarily discontinued, he would order a hearty wiener schnitzel instead, according to The Takeout.

He also has a deep nostalgia for Kaiserschmarrn, a traditional Austrian shredded pancake made by his mother, often served with fruit compote or dusted with powdered sugar, as Really Eats notes.

The man who once consumed nearly 4,000 calories a day to fuel a champion’s body now fuels a different kind of life — one built on plants, protein, and the occasional schnitzel. It turns out that even the world’s most famous muscles have learned to slow down, adapt, and still enjoy the meal.
