Viggo Mortensen has never been the type to talk about fitness like it’s a project with a start and end date. Ask him about staying in shape and the conversation tends to drift toward hiking trails, soccer games, and long walks rather than sets and reps.

That casual attitude is exactly what makes his consistency stand out. There’s no dramatic transformation story behind how he looks, just a steady refusal to let activity become optional.

Constant Activity Matters More Than Any Single Workout

Mortensen has been fairly direct about why he avoids the stop-and-start approach to exercise that trips up a lot of people. “You’re putting yourself at risk for damage to your heart,” he’s explained about staying continually active, pointing to sporadic, on-again-off-again routines as more harmful than helpful over time.

That philosophy shows up in how he structures his days generally, favoring year-round movement over intense bursts followed by long breaks. Consistency, in his telling, protects the body in a way that occasional intensity never quite manages to.

Everyday Movement Counts as Much as the Gym

Rather than treating exercise as something confined to a gym, Mortensen has pointed to ordinary daily choices, walking or biking instead of driving, as just as valuable. Soccer, basketball, hiking, and long walks make up much of his actual routine.

He’s also connected that kind of movement to mental clarity, noting that walking engages the mind in a way that passive screen time doesn’t. Staying physically active, for him, is tied directly to staying mentally sharp.

He Ramps Up When a Specific Role Demands It

For certain parts, Mortensen has described putting in noticeably more effort than usual, training harder and paying closer attention to food than his normal baseline. “I worked really hard and swam and ran and played soccer,” he’s said about preparing for one particular role, joking that he’s naturally far lazier than the character required him to look.

That willingness to push harder for specific projects, then ease back to his normal routine afterward, reflects a pattern rather than a constant state of peak conditioning. The baseline habits are what carry him the rest of the time.

Weight Has Shifted Dramatically for Roles, Not Vanity

Mortensen has gone to real physical extremes for certain characters, most notably losing a significant amount of weight to appear convincingly gaunt in one particularly demanding film role. “I had to lose weight, and I had to look emaciated,” he’s said about that preparation, describing it as a deliberate, temporary sacrifice for the part rather than an ongoing lifestyle.

Once filming wrapped, he moved back toward a more sustainable approach built around whole foods and varied activity. The extremes have always been tied to specific roles, never treated as a long-term goal in themselves.

Mental Peace Gets Treated as Seriously as Diet

Beyond food and movement, Mortensen has spoken about mental wellness as an equally important piece of staying healthy. “It’s not just about what you eat or how you move,” he’s said, framing mental peace as just as essential to the overall picture.

That holistic view, treating the mind and body as connected rather than separate projects, seems to be a big part of why his approach has held up so consistently over the years. Nothing about it reads as a short-term fix.
