A viral kitchen habit keeps popping up on wellness feeds, and it has nothing to do with skincare bottles or supplements.

People are swapping out their usual cooking method for something far gentler, convinced their skin and their cells will thank them.

So what exactly is this ritual, and does it actually hold up.

The Trick Getting All The Attention

Instead of charring, roasting, or deep frying, people are leaning into steaming, boiling, and simmering. A Belgian study found these gentler methods can cut a harmful compound called AGEs by roughly half compared to high heat cooking.

Those compounds form when sugar and protein react under intense dry heat, the exact reaction responsible for a steak’s crust or a pastry’s golden edge. Over time, that buildup has been linked to tissue stiffness and inflammation.

Why Cooks Are Suddenly Marinating Everything

A quick soak in lemon juice or vinegar before cooking has become part of the ritual too. Researchers found this simple step can cut AGE formation by about half on its own.

Herbs like rosemary, thyme, and garlic reportedly help even more, acting almost like a natural buffer against the browning reaction. One food science consultant put it plainly, noting “the realistic promise is to lower the inflammatory burden, not reverse the clock,” in comments shared with Fox News.

Before You Toss Your Grill

Dermatologists caution the hype may be running ahead of the science. No single food or cooking swap can single-handedly transform your skin, according to a UC San Diego dermatologist.

The bigger factor still seems to be your overall pattern of eating, not one clever kitchen trick.

Still, there is something appealing about a ritual this low effort, a splash of lemon juice, a lower flame, and a little more patience at the stove. It might not turn back the clock, but it is a small, tasty way to hedge your bets.
