Alicia Silverstone built an entire second career around clean eating, and it never stopped once she became a mom. She raised her son the exact same way she eats herself, which means dinner at her house looks nothing like a typical American kitchen.

Long before clean eating became a hashtag, the Clueless star was writing bestselling books about it and turning her own home into a real world experiment. Here is what has stayed off her son’s plate since he was old enough to eat solid food.

Meat And Fish Never Make It Onto His Plate

Silverstone has followed a vegan diet for decades, and when her son Bear Blu was born in 2011, she raised him the exact same way from day one. The family sticks to plant based meals like tacos and stir fries, skipping meat, fish, and poultry altogether.

Bear has said before that skipping meat is actually one of his favorite parts of growing up this way, since he never has to eat anything he considers unappetizing. For Silverstone, the whole approach has become second nature, more of a lifestyle than a rule she has to enforce at the table.

Dairy And Eggs Are Treated The Same Way

Cheese, milk, and eggs are just as off limits in the Silverstone household as meat is. Her plant based philosophy calls for skipping all animal products altogether, relying instead on beans, whole grains, and vegetables for protein and calcium.

That means no cheese pizza, ice cream, or scrambled eggs at breakfast, even though those are typical staples in most households with young kids. Silverstone has written extensively about the reasoning behind the choice, arguing that whole plant foods can meet the same nutritional needs without the animal products.

Refined Sugar Is Treated Like A Warning Sign

White sugar rarely if ever shows up in her son’s food. On her own website, Silverstone has said white sugar and processed junk should be avoided entirely, leaning instead on maple syrup, brown rice syrup, and fruit for sweetness.

Processed And Packaged Snacks Rarely Get In The Door

Chips, packaged snacks, and anything overly processed do not fit into the family’s philosophy either. “Move away from the foods that are harmful, the meat, the dairy, the sugar,” Silverstone told The Associated Press, naming processed food right alongside them as something worth cutting out.

Silverstone has been especially vocal about how ultra processed ingredients affect energy and mood over the years. For her, cutting them out is as much about how the family feels day to day as it is about long term health.

Silverstone has said her son genuinely does not feel deprived, and that a really good piece of fruit is basically his version of candy. Whether or not every parent wants to go quite that far, it has clearly worked for her own happy, healthy kid for well over a decade now.
