The Foods Scientists Are Studying for Healthy Aging

Most healthy aging advice sticks to familiar territory, more fiber, more protein, less sugar. A newer, more specific area of research has been digging into compounds most people have never heard of, found in foods most people already have in the fridge.

The science is still developing, but the early findings are compelling enough that researchers keep coming back to the same two compounds. Here is what they are actually studying.

A Compound Hiding in Wheat Germ and Aged Cheese

Spermidine is a naturally occurring compound that declines in the body with age, and researchers have been studying whether topping it back up through food might help. It appears to trigger a cellular cleanup process called autophagy, where cells clear out and recycle damaged components rather than letting them accumulate.

A 2024 study published in a major cell biology journal found the compound was essential for the kind of cellular renewal triggered by fasting, at least in animal models. Wheat germ, mushrooms, aged cheeses and fermented soy products are among the richest naturally occurring sources researchers have identified so far.

A Second Compound That Works Differently

Urolithin A takes a more roundabout path to the body. It does not exist directly in any food, instead getting produced when gut bacteria break down compounds found in pomegranates, walnuts, raspberries and strawberries.

Researchers studying it have focused heavily on mitochondria, the energy producing structures inside cells, since urolithin A appears to help clear out the damaged ones.

Scientists at Charles University recently compared the two compounds directly, concluding that urolithin A seems to target muscle and metabolic health more specifically, while spermidine appears to offer broader benefits.

Why the Food Itself Might Matter More Than a Pill

Not everyone’s gut bacteria convert the ellagitannins in pomegranates and walnuts into meaningful amounts of urolithin A, which is part of why the compound varies so much from person to person. That inconsistency is one reason some researchers have turned to supplements instead of relying on food alone.

Spermidine tells a different story, since the strongest human evidence so far comes from regular dietary intake rather than concentrated supplements. A diet that regularly includes wheat germ, mushrooms and aged cheese appears to deliver amounts in the range researchers associate with the effect.

None of this is settled science yet, and neither compound is a substitute for the basics that already have decades of research behind them. It is still an interesting reminder that some of the most cutting edge aging research keeps leading back to a cheese board and a bowl of mushrooms.
