Elite athletes usually build their entire diet around maximizing raw performance, chasing every possible edge over the competition. One Formula One champion made a very different priority central to his eating instead.

He has faced real public skepticism over the choice and has stood by it through years of criticism anyway. Keep reading to see what the habit is and why he refuses to budge on it.

A Documentary Sparked The Original Change

Lewis Hamilton has said a documentary about the meat industry became the spark behind his decision to go vegan. He has cited its effects on the environment, animal welfare and human health as the reasoning behind the shift, along with his own family’s medical history playing a role in the decision.

That combination of environmental concern and personal health reasoning gave the change real staying power beyond a passing interest. It was never framed as a performance hack, it was rooted in something he cared about well before it became part of his public image.

He Made The Switch Gradually Rather Than All At Once

Rather than cutting everything out overnight, Hamilton eased into the change over roughly two years. He has said he stopped eating red meat first, then gradually cut chicken, stayed pescatarian for a stretch, and eventually gave up fish entirely as the final step.

He has since advised others to follow the same gradual approach rather than attempting a sudden, all or nothing switch. That patient, staged process is part of why the change ended up sticking rather than fading after a few difficult weeks.

Critics Have Questioned Whether It Hurts His Performance

Not everyone believed the diet would work for someone competing at his level. When critics suggested the switch was costing him muscle and performance, Hamilton pushed back directly, calling the claim absolute rubbish and encouraging people to do their own research instead of assuming.

He has also said he feels physically stronger and mentally sharper than ever since making the change, crediting the plant based diet directly with some of his continued success on the track. Winning a world championship the same year only made that argument harder to dismiss.

He Has Built An Entire Business Around The Commitment

Beyond his personal diet, Hamilton has backed the habit with an actual business. He co-founded a vegan burger chain called Neat Burger alongside actor Leonardo DiCaprio, with locations now open in cities including London, Milan and New York.

That kind of investment suggests the commitment goes well beyond his own plate. Building an entire company around plant based food is a hard thing to walk back from, even under public scrutiny.

So while critics have questioned the choice for years, Lewis Hamilton has kept eating, and building businesses around, the exact same plant based commitment. Sometimes the habit someone refuses to give up says as much about their values as it does about their diet.
