Serena Williams’ (44) Family Food Rules: How She Introduces Healthy Eating at Home

Serena Williams built one of the most dominant careers in sports history partly on the back of what she ate, and that same intentionality has carried directly into how she feeds her two daughters. Food in the Williams Ohanian household comes with real thought behind it, even when it looks like ordinary family chaos.
The approach blends her own athletic background with a healthy dose of playfulness from her husband, Alexis Ohanian. Between cooking lessons, glucose tracking and a running joke about who steals food off the kids’ plates, healthy eating in this family rarely feels like a lecture.
None of it looks like a rigid meal plan handed down from a personal chef. Here is how Serena Williams actually introduces healthy eating at home.
A Plant Based Diet Inspired By Her Sister
Williams shifted toward a mostly plant based diet after her sister Venus was diagnosed with Sjögren’s syndrome, an autoimmune condition, and went vegan as part of managing it. Serena joined her sister in solidarity, a choice she has credited with helping fuel her return to elite competition, according to Health Digest.
That same plant forward approach has carried into how she now feeds Olympia and Adira, even as the family leaves room for plenty of normal kid favorites too. The diet was never framed as a strict rulebook, more a foundation the rest of the household’s eating habits get built around.
Cooking Becomes A Genuine Family Activity
Williams has made a point of getting Olympia directly involved in the kitchen, sharing a video of the two of them making her family gumbo recipe together. Ohanian jokingly claimed he felt attacked when a fan praised Williams for passing down good cooking to their daughter, according to Sportskeeda.
“Papa pays for the food, he gets to snack as much as he wants,” Ohanian has joked, describing what the family calls the Papa Tax whenever he sneaks bites off the kids’ plates. The running joke has become one of the more consistent food related bits in the household.
Cooking together has extended beyond the kitchen at home too. Williams and Olympia cooked chicken nachos together on a culinary stage at BottleRock in 2025, with Olympia cheerfully declaring herself the better chef of the two, according to AOL.
Glucose Monitoring Changed How She Thinks About Meals
More recently, Williams began using a continuous glucose monitor through a partnership with Lingo, which revealed her longtime go to breakfast of oatmeal was actually triggering a glucose spike. She has said the discovery pushed her to rethink meals she had eaten on repeat for years without ever questioning them.
That awareness has carried directly into how she approaches feeding her own family day to day. Small adjustments, like a short walk after a meal, have become part of how Williams manages her own energy while raising two young daughters, according to Yahoo.
Between a plant forward diet inspired by her sister, cooking lessons that turn into genuine bonding time, and a newfound attention to how food actually affects her body, Williams treats healthy eating as something closer to an ongoing family project than a fixed rulebook.
The Papa Tax, it seems, remains the one rule nobody is trying very hard to break.
