You can prepare amazing protein pancakes even without baking powder. Increase the volume of the dough by adding whipped egg whites or choosing buttermilk instead of regular milk.

Protein is a daily macronutrient needed by the human body. If you do sports or want to build muscles, then the quantity of protein is higher. Taking protein shakes may be a little difficult to do constantly for a long time, so protein pancakes also work perfectly for a variety in your menu. 

If we compare protein pancakes and regular ones, protein pancakes are richer in protein, while regular ones are higher in carbohydrates. You can make both regular and protein pancakes without baking powder, but let’s see what are the nutrients in the main ingredients of protein pancakes.

Eggs 

Eggs are one of the best sources of proteins and one of the main ingredients of pancakes. If you want to increase the protein level in your recipe, feel free to add one more egg to the dough. 

It will improve the texture and make the dough smoother. If you want to create fluffy pancakes, you can separate the whites from the red and whip them to increase the volume of the dough. 

Whey

One good extra ingredient to increase the proteinic level is to add a scoop of whey protein. Personally, consuming whey protein constantly only as a milkshake sometimes becomes not that unpleasant. Instead, I prefer sometimes to incorporate it in pancakes or other cake recipes.  

Whey protein tastes like chocolate, vanilla, tiramisu, or several fruits. By putting a scoop in your recipe, those tastes will also dominate your pancakes. 

Peanut Butter

Another ingredient to boost the protein level can be peanut butter. The pleasant taste of peanuts will make pancakes taste unique. I would describe this taste as cookies.

However, the trick with peanut butter is that it contains a good protein level but has almost double the fat level. So if you go for peanut butter, be careful and modest: it is a bomb of calories. 

Oats

Blending oats until they are in a flour texture is also a fantastic idea for preparing healthy pancakes. Oat flour has fewer calories and carbs but more protein and fiber than regular flour. Also, it is proven to have cardiovascular benefits and may lower cholesterol. 

Banana

The final selection when talking about healthy pancakes is bananas. Not that high in protein, but very rich in carbohydrates. [1] Every time I have a banana that cannot last for long in the fridge, I blend it and mix it with the dough. 

The beauty of this ingredient is that once you add a banana, you can reduce the milk quantity in half—more carbs and less fat, precisely what you need to resist the training longer.

Can You Replace Flour With Protein Powder in Pancakes?

Protein powder is a good substitute for regular flour. However, if you use them both in the same recipe, you may need to add more milk to the mix, so instead of doing that, you can add protein powder. 

To add some value to the recipe, you can add some blended oats and one banana. With whey protein and milk, it will end up in an amazing protein pancake recipe. 

What Can You Use Instead of Protein Powder in Pancakes?

As I mentioned, it depends on the recipe you are choosing. Therefore, I would also motivate you to experiment with how you combine the ingredients. 

One good substitute for protein powder is whole wheat flour combined with Greek yogurt, which is also very rich in protein content, 9,95g per 3,5 oz. [2]

Another possible option is oat blended well and peanut butter. So overall, choose what the best for you is.

As I said, protein pancakes don’t need baking powder to be soft and fluffy. And this recipe is the perfect example. What is more, they are a great after-workout meal since they contain two necessary macronutrients: carbs and protein.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 Eggs
  • 1 Banana
  • 1 scoop Protein Powder You can use any flavor, but I suggest Cookies & Cream, Banana, or Chocolate.
  • 2/3 cup Oats
  • 1 teaspoon Peanut Butter

Instructions
 

  • Put all ingredients in a blender and mix it for about a minute until you get an even texture.
  • Warm a non-stick pan over medium heat. If you are not sure if the pancakes will stick to it, you can use cooking spray oil. However, try to avoid any fats to skip these extra, unnecessary calories.
  • Once the pan is warm enough, pour some mixture on it. Don't pour too much because it would be difficult to turn the pancakes.
  • Bake each pancake for about two minutes, until you see the bubbles, then turn them and bake for another minute.

  • Serve your protein pancakes with fruits, low-calorie jam, or just eat them without the spread. They are tasty in any way.

Notes

I often add some additional ingredients to the batter. Some examples are raspberries, frozen blueberries, and grated carrot. Each additional ingredient adds its own flavor, so don’t be afraid to experiment.
You can make these protein pancakes one day in advance, just make sure that you cover them with aluminum foil or place them in an airtight container. Leave them at room temperature and serve the next day with your favorite topping.

What Are Some Baking Powder Substitutes for Pancakes?

Baking powder is used to make them fluffy and softer. One of the tricks I used to obtain the most delicate pancakes without baking powder is buttermilk. Don’t underestimate this product, which puts the result on another level. Maybe the pancakes won’t double volume, but they will melt in your mouth in the first bite. 

Another option is to use self-rise flour. This type of flour has to rise agents and interchange the effect of the baking powder by helping pancakes grow while being cooked. 

Whipped white eggs are another element that can play the role of a rising agent. The cream has air bubbles that help to increase the volume and make the dough lighter and softer.
