Every year seems to bring a new miracle skincare serum or a supplement promising to slow the clock. The habit everyone is suddenly buzzing about this time costs nothing and takes less than a minute.

It has nothing to do with a fridge full of powders or a sunrise workout either. Longevity researchers say it is something most people could start tomorrow morning without changing anything else about their routine.

Here is the simple habit people keep pointing to as the one worth actually keeping.

What the Habit Actually Is

The trick is drinking a full glass of water before doing anything else, including making coffee. Emily Johnston, a research professor at NYU Langone who studies healthy aging, says it is the first thing she recommends to anyone trying to protect their health as they get older.

She told TODAY.com to “start every single day with at least one glass of water.” Keeping a filled glass by the bed removes the only excuse most people have for skipping it.

Why It Keeps Getting Linked to Aging Well

The body loses close to a liter of fluid overnight through breathing and sweat, so most people wake up already running low. That mild dehydration has been tied to sluggish circulation and duller looking skin before the day even starts.

It also fits into a bigger shift in how researchers talk about aging well, which is less about adding years and more about protecting what scientists call healthspan, the stretch of life spent actually healthy. Small, repeatable habits like this one are the pieces that tend to add up.

No expensive routine required, just a glass of water within reach before your feet hit the floor. Sometimes the habits that age the best are the ones too simple to bother skipping.
