Krispy Krunchy Chicken vs. KFC: Which Is Better?
For many, Kentucky Fried Chicken is the undeniable king of fried chicken. With its melt-in-your-mouth breading seasoned with just enough pepper to wake up your taste buds, KFC no doubt holds a spot in everyone’s hearts. Still, there are more fried chicken restaurants worth the hype, and I’ve decided to explore them. So, how does Krispy Krunchy Chicken compare to KFC?
KKC offers a few seafood options, while KFC focuses on chicken. Try Krispy Krunchy Chicken if you can find one near you. KFC is ubiquitous, but KKC isn’t, so use that chance to see if their small menu can compete with a major brand.
Let’s closely examine both brands to determine who will be the ultimate dinner on your dining table. Aside from a similar-looking acronym, KKC, and KFC have quite a few distinct differences that set them apart. I’ll break it down for you below.
Origins
KFC’s origin is widely publicized, and you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn’t know even the tiniest bit of information about it. It started in 1930 when Col. Harlan Sanders opened Sanders Court & Cafe in North Corbin, Kentucky, and it wasn’t until 1952 that the first franchise location opened in Salt Lake City, Utah.
In contrast, Krispy Krunchy Chicken first appeared in 1989. In one of his Lafayette, Louisiana, convenience stores, proprietor Neil Onebane started frying and selling some chicken. This practice has since expanded throughout the country, offering motorists some delicious fried chicken while allowing them to refuel.
Menu
Both KFC and KKC aim to attract customers who might not want fried chicken at that moment, so let’s see what each one has to offer:
- KFC
- Chicken Wrap
- Chicken Sandwich
- Chicken Tenders
- Pot Pie
- Famous Bowl Combo
- KKC
- Breakfast sandwiches in biscuits
- Chicken Sandwich
- Chicken Wings
- Chicken Tenders
- Fried Shrimp
- Fried Fish
KKC’s shrimp and fish offerings might not be expansive, but it’s an option for those who want a change of pace from fried chicken. However, they’re still breaded and fried, but at least they’re something different.
KFC, on the other hand, only offers chicken, and their Pot Pie is the only non-fried chicken option available, which might not work if you’re not in the mood for chicken.
Fried Chicken
Let’s face it: you won’t be visiting or ordering from KKC or KFC if you don’t want fried chicken. So what are your options?
KFC offers chicken buckets of 8, 12, or 16 pieces; you can get the same as part of a family meal deal. Solo diners can opt for smaller combos with 2, 3, or 4 pieces of chicken, all configured to have different chicken pieces in each box. And let’s not forget the four styles available: original, extra crispy, Kentucky grilled, and spicy.
KKC refers to their chicken as “Krispy Chicken,” and they give each piece a Cajun spice that goes beyond the skin. With options to include solely white meat, exclusively dark meat, or a combination of the two, they offer selections in 8, 12, 16, and 25 pieces. You can also purchase them as a 2-, 3-, or 4-piece meal or a family meal platter.
Side Dishes
If you don’t want your fried chicken piece to look lonely on your plate, don’t worry: both restaurants have a selection of delicious side dishes for you to choose from:
- KFC
- “Secret Recipe” Fries
- Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
- Mashed Potatoes, no Gravy
- Gravy
- Mac & Cheese
- Biscuit
- Cole Slaw
- Green Beans
- Whole Kernel Corn
- KKC
- Honey Biscuit
- Red Beans & Rice
- Jambalaya
- Mac-N-Cheese
- Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
- Fries
- Regular
- Potato wedges
- Waffle-cut
- Boudin Bites
Both restaurants have a sizable selection of sides, but KKC easily wins in variety and uniqueness. They easily stand out with sides such as jambalaya and red beans & rice; they even have their signature item with Boudin Bites.
On the other hand, KFC keeps it simple. After all, you can’t go wrong with simple sides such as mashed potatoes, green beans, and whole-kernel corn. You can even forgo the gravy on the mashed potatoes or make do like me and dip your chicken pieces in gravy and nothing else.
Locations
KFC is an internationally recognized brand with several locations worldwide. As of 2022, the chain has over 27,000 branches worldwide. That’s a lot of chicken!
KKC’s primary business model is to exist within convenience stores and gas stations. The idea is to serve customers delicious fried chicken while allowing them to refuel their vehicles and purchase other things. The focus is on convenience; with stores slowly expanding into Mexico and Malaysia, it’s clear to see that their business model is working.
Which One Is Better: Krispy Krunchy Chicken or KFC?
Comparing Krispy Krunchy Chicken against KFC might not seem fair at first glance, especially if you consider just how much KFC dwarfs KKC in size. But the competition becomes fierce if you ignore the disparity in branch numbers.
That’s because aside from fried chicken, KKC has a more diverse menu than KFC. KKC offers a few seafood options, while KFC focuses on chicken. KKC’s side dishes also stand out better, offering eye-catching, Louisiana-based options such as jambalaya.
But when it comes to the chicken itself, KFC puts up a serious fight against KKC. With four different styles, KFC can accommodate more taste buds than KKC. So, for me, at least, it’s an obvious winner.
Ultimately, here’s my suggestion: try Krispy Krunchy Chicken if you can find one near you. KFC is ubiquitous, but KKC isn’t, so use that chance to see if their small menu can compete with a major brand.
