Reality TV has given the public a front-row seat to plenty of celebrity parenting styles, but few have sparked as much ongoing conversation as Kourtney Kardashian’s.

Between co-sleeping, homeschooling talk, and a family table that looks almost nothing like the snack-filled vans her own mother packs for the grandkids, Kourtney has built a parenting identity that’s equal parts nurturing and, by her own family’s admission, a little “crunchy.”

Her Parenting Philosophy Centers on Closeness

Kourtney has described her approach as attachment parenting, a style built around staying physically and emotionally close to a child for as long as possible. She’s said the instinct came naturally rather than from following a trend, telling one outlet she simply felt drawn to keep her firstborn close from the very beginning.

That closeness has included co-sleeping with all four of her children, something she’s said she never rushed to end. She’s spoken about waiting until each child was ready to move to their own bed on their own timeline, rather than setting a hard cutoff herself.

She’s Embraced the “Crunchy” Label Herself

Kourtney hasn’t shied away from being grouped into what’s often nicknamed “crunchy” parenting, a looser, more instinct-driven style that leans away from rigid schedules. She’s floated homeschooling as a real option for her kids, questioning aloud why the traditional school system still looks the way it does.

This back-to-nature instinct extends into how she talks about healing her own upbringing through parenting. She’s said outright that she parents differently than her mother did, framing it as a conscious break from the more controlling style she grew up with.

Not Everyone in the Family Is on Board

Kourtney’s approach isn’t the family default. Her mother, Kris Jenner, has reportedly not been a fan of the more hands-off, back-to-nature style, though Kourtney has brushed off the criticism by pointing out it isn’t Kris’s parenting decision to make.

Her sister Khloé has taken the opposite approach entirely, describing herself as far more scheduled and strict. The contrast between the two sisters has become a recurring topic on their family’s show, with each defending her own method as what works best for her kids.

The Family Table Runs Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, and Mostly Vegan

When it comes to actual meals, Kourtney’s rules are just as deliberate as her parenting philosophy. She’s said cutting gluten and dairy led to a noticeable shift in her kids’ behavior, and the family has stuck with that approach for years.

She’s also described herself as roughly ninety-five percent vegan, favoring home-cooked meals like soups and chili made in batches on Sundays so there’s something healthy ready during a busy week. Processed ingredients and fast food are largely kept off the menu entirely, and she’s said her kids have never eaten McDonald’s fries.

The Snacks She Does Approve Of

Despite the strict reputation, Kourtney isn’t opposed to treats altogether. She’s spoken about looking for candy and snacks made without artificial dyes or food coloring, pointing to brands like organic gummy bears and dried fruit snaps as things her kids are allowed to enjoy between meals.

Her stance has less to do with banning sugar outright and more to do with avoiding specific ingredients she considers harmful. She’s called finding healthy alternatives a “never-ending battle,” acknowledging that keeping kids satisfied without leaning on typical processed snacks takes real effort.

Her Kids Have Started Pushing Back

The strict food rules haven’t gone entirely unchallenged inside her own household. During a recent episode of the family’s show, Kris showed up to a pumpkin patch outing with lollipops and Gatorade for the grandkids, prompting Kourtney to immediately clock the sugar-heavy spread the moment she arrived.

Her daughter Penelope has reportedly started intervening on her mother’s rules more than she used to, a small but telling sign that the family’s strictest eater is growing older and forming her own opinions about food. It’s a shift that mirrors what a lot of parents eventually run into once kids start asking their own questions about the rules at home.
