18 Ideas To Make Bisquick Pancakes Better
Bisquick is an excellent substitute for traditional pancake batter. Instead of flour, it contains wheat; it is vegan and antiallergenic. Still, Bisquick pancakes can sometimes be a bit dry or just ordinary. So, how can Bisquick pancakes be better?
Adjusting the milk and egg amount can improve Bisquick pancakes. Since Bisquick pancakes taste less sweet than regular pancakes, you can add more sugar. For additional flavor, add grated apple, mashed banana, cream cheese, or almond flour. You can also make savory pancakes by adding salt and other savory ingredients.
Bisquick pancakes are a great way to simplify the pancake-making process. However, your pancakes might not turn out as you’d hoped. In the following paragraphs, I will share helpful tips on how to improve your Bisquick pancakes to avoid any trouble and fix what you could have prevented. At the end of the article, you will find my favorite recipe for Bisquick pancakes!
How to improve Bisquick pancakes?
As I already mentioned, Bisquick pancakes can feel a little dry, sticky, and bland. The good news is the taste, texture, and consistency of the pancakes can be significantly improved through several simple steps.
You can easily do a few things to improve the taste of your Bisquick pancakes, as the trick is to get the batter consistency right.
Separate egg whites and egg yolks
To make the fluffiest Bisquick pancakes possible, separate egg whites and egg yolks. Mix egg whites with an electric mixer until you get light, fluffy foam.
Egg yolks should be mixed with other wet ingredients. Then, add dry ingredients and mix. In the next step, you will need a wooden spoon to slowly add fluffy whites to the rest of the batter.
Adjust the milk and egg amount
The standard amount for 5-7 pancakes is one cup of Bisquick, one cup of milk, one teaspoon of baking soda, and one egg. However, these measurements aren’t set in stone and depend on the type of milk you use and the egg quality.
Therefore, your battery can be too thick or too runny. Rule number one is always homogenizing the mixture before deciding on consistency. If your batter is too runny, slowly add more Bisquick, tablespoon by tablespoon, and stir after each.
If your batter is too thick, slowly add milk. The batter is rarely too thick due to a lack of eggs. However, if you seem to have added too much Bisquick, add another egg in addition to the milk.
Mix the liquid ingredients separately from the dry ones
Mixing everything together isn’t a good idea and will result in a lumpy pancake batter. Therefore, always mix the dry ingredients in one bowl and the wet ones in another. When you are done mixing them separately, you can then merge them to homogenize the batter.
Don’t use cold ingredients
The milk and eggs are ingredients that require refrigeration, so they will be cold when you take them out. Using cold milk and eggs will cause the batter to turn out lumpy because they won’t be warm enough to homogenize with the dry ingredients.
Let the milk and eggs sit at room temperature and warm a bit before you add them to the dry ingredients.
Include almond flour to the batter
Almonds are loved by many people, and they also bring lots of nutritious value to meals. So why not add it to the pancakes, too? For each tablespoon of almond flour, just add two spoons of milk. It will bring a nutty flavor to the pancakes.
Add apple
Grated Apple will make your Bisquick pancakes juicy and sweet. If you are an apple cake lover, this is a combination you need to try. For even better taste, sprinkle some cinnamon in the batter, too.
Add banana
Mashed bananas are usually used in pancakes to replace eggs. But, it doesn’t need to be the case this time. They are a great addition to any pancake type due to their loveable flavor and sweetness.
Choose yogurt over milk
Yogurt makes Bisquick pancake batter creamier and juicier. If you add yogurt instead of milk to the Bisquick mix, your pancakes will be lighter and slightly sour. You need to try it, for sure!
Since it is a dry ingredient, don’t forget to put less milk.
Mix wisely
Mixing the ingredients too little will make your pancakes dry and thick; however, mixing them too little will destroy the bonds and give you runny pancakes.
It is best to mix in episodes and check the consistency regularly. Scoop some batter with a ladle and pour it back inside the bowl. If the batter doesn’t tear, and smoothly sinks inside the bowl, you’re good to go.
Add sugar
The Bisquick pancake batter is less sweet than regular pancakes because Bisquick contains less sugar. If your pancake batter is bland and flavorless, the solution may be as simple as adding some sugar to it.
Serve warm
Your pancakes taste bland, even though you did everything right. It happens. Warming them up might be just what they need.
Pancakes are a dish best served warm, so the serving temperature plays a massive role in their taste. Make sure your pancakes are still warm when you serve/eat them so that you can taste them to the fullest.
Choose the right skillet
It is apparent that you need a non-stick pan, but there are many different materials. The best way to go is either a granite pan or a cast-iron skillet.
You should also make sure that your skillet is properly heated and oiled. Your pancakes will stick if your skillet isn’t hot enough, even though you oil it properly. And remember, golden brown is what we are looking for, not light yellow, not orange.
Bisquick pancakes tend to be stickier than regular batter pancakes, so you need to be very careful with your skillet. You might have a pancake skillet, but those aren’t intended for Bisquick batter.
Add some flavor
Nothing can make your pancakes more flavorful than deliberately adding flavors. Vanilla extract is an excellent addition to the batter. It will add flavor as well as intensify the already existing flavors.
Pumpkin pie spice will turn your kitchen into a bakery. Your Bisquick pancakes will taste like a combination of pie and pancake, primarily because of the wheat content of the Bisquick mix.
You can also mix orange extract and nutmeg and give your Bisquick pancakes some edge and character.
Add buttermilk
There’s no dish some buttermilk can’t enrich, and your Bisquick pancakes aren’t an exception. Rich yet neutral, buttermilk can add fluff and milkiness to your pancakes and also make them softer and easier to cook.
Don’t go too far, though, as it can quickly thicken your batter. Pour it slowly, and don’t add more than half a cup.
Sift the dry ingredients
After mixing the dry ingredients together, don’t add the liquid ones right away. Take your time to sift the dry ingredients before mixing everything,
Sifting the dry ingredients will add fluffiness to your pancakes and make the batter creamier, lighter, and smoother.
Add cream cheese or ricotta
Adding cream cheese or ricotta to your Bisquick pancake batter may be the best thing to do to improve the taste. These ingredients will give you the perfect combination of pancakes and cheesecakes.
The trick is to whip the ricotta or cream cheese well before adding them to the batter.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with the toppings
Just like the flavor is in the spice for any other dish, there’s much flavor in the topping when it comes to Bisquick pancakes. If nothing else works, there’s always the topping. Get creative and top your pancakes with whatever is your favorite.
Bacon and honey can never do wrong if you are in the mood for something sweet and savory at the same time. Orange and syrup go great if you are in the mood for something zesty and edgy, and banana slices and whipped cream work excellent if you want something rich yet elegant.
Turn them into savory pancakes
If you don’t add any sugar to the Bisquick mix, you will notice that pancakes have a really neutral taste, or are somehow bland. This means that they can easily be turned into savory pancakes.
So, when you are mixing the batter, choose salt or sugar. Salt for savory pancakes, and sugar for sweet ones.
If you opt for savory Bisquick pancakes, then 1 teaspoon of salt per 1 cup of Bisquick will be enough. You can also add a little bit of nutmeg, parsley, or shallot.
You can incorporate other ideas into the batter: grated cheese and ham, spinach, grated zucchini, peas… Ideas are endless.
How many pancakes does a box of Bisquick make?
A box of Bisquick makes about 27 regular-sized pancakes (finger-thick and four inches in diameter). You will need 2 and a half cups of milk and 3 eggs to make pancakes with the entire box.
If you want thinner pancakes, you can make up to 35 pieces with a Bisquick box. On the other hand, if you prefer thicker pancakes, you can make about 23. However, you shouldn’t blindly stick to this number of pancakes, as the standard size isn’t everyone’s favorite.
In addition, you will probably need to adjust the milk and egg amount, so don’t take that amount too seriously either. The number of pancakes and the amount of milk and eggs is purely indicative, and it doesn’t mean that you can’t adjust it.
Is there a substitute for Bisquick?
Bisquick is intended for pancakes, waffles, biscuits, and muffins, so basically, you can substitute it with all-purpose flour, but only for those purposes. Still, you should make a proper mixture, as just replacing the Bisquick with flour won’t be enough. Mix 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 ½ teaspoon of baking powder, ¼ tablespoon of salt, and one tablespoon butter.
In essence, Bisquick is closest to all-purpose white flour because both are made of wheat. However, you can’t use Bisquick everywhere. You would use regular all-purpose flour, as it is intended for sweet pastries only.
