Abuelita hot chocolate is a spicy Mexican-style hot chocolate and nothing like the chocolate you are used to. It is grainier and stronger-flavored, so Abuelita hot chocolate follows the same concept. Although delicious just the way it is, there are things you can do to make Abuelita hot chocolate even better. So how to make Abuelita hot chocolate better?

Add cinnamon, cocoa, coffee, marshmallow, orange liqueur, caramel, maple syrup, or whipped cream to improve Abuelita hot chocolate.

Abuelita hot chocolate can taste a bit spicy, especially if you are trying it for the first time, or you may lack flavor. Depending on your preferences, there are things you can do to improve it, so in the following paragraphs, I will give you some ideas on making your Abuelita hot chocolate better.

Cinnamon

Although Abuelita hot chocolate already has cinnamon, you can still add some if you enjoy spicy and intense flavors. The cinnamon in Abuelita hot chocolate is noticeable, but it isn’t overwhelming and is there to accentuate the taste of chocolate.

If you want your Abuelita hot chocolate to taste between chocolate and cinnamon rolls, sprinkle some cinnamon in your cup. Don’t overdo it, though, but add gradually until you get the taste you are looking for.

Cocoa

Add half a teaspoon of cocoa powder if you want to intensify the Abuelita hot chocolate flavors. Since cocoa is the main ingredient in chocolate, it is natural that they complement excellently, and even if it gets more on the bitter side, it will still be delicious.

Cocoa powder accentuates the chocolate flavor and adds more magic and richness to your Abuelita hot chocolate. Due to its tender nature, it can also make the hot chocolate silkier, almost velvety. This is the solution for you if you like the classic chocolate flavor and are open to some experimentation.

Coffee

If you just want to round the flavors up in your Abuelita hot chocolate without changing much, then some espresso will do the trick here. Don’t add espresso powder, though, as it may make your Abuelita hot chocolate taste way bitterer than you would like.

Instead, mix a teaspoon of coffee in half a cup of hot milk and add it to the Abuelita hot chocolate. Since Abuelita hot chocolate requires four cups of milk, add three and a half cups of milk, add the Abuelita drink tablets, and add the milk and coffee mixture.

The coffee will balance everything out and will also add some kick to your Abuelita hot chocolate.

Marshmallow

Adding a marshmallow to your cup of Abuelita hot chocolate is a pretty obvious idea, but no hot chocolate list is complete without marshmallows. Let your marshmallow float on the surface of your Abuelita hot chocolate and enrich your drink.

You can either add the marshmallows to the Abuelita hot chocolate pot while making it and let them melt or add them to your cup. However, since marshmallows are mostly sugar, your Abuelita hot chocolate will become even sweeter, so don’t add too many pieces.

Orange Liqueur

Add a few drops of orange liqueur to your cup if you want a little zing and zest in your Abuelita hot chocolate. Since Abuelita hot chocolate is vibrant and spicy, some orange flavor is more than welcome to add even more playfulness to your drink.

Caramel/Vanilla

Adding caramel to your Abuelita hot chocolate works on so many levels, and it adds flavor, tones down the overly spicy notes, balances the flavors, and enriches the drink. You can make caramel and add it or add a store-bought caramel extract.

The same goes for vanilla as well. The vanilla flavor will also mellow what needs mellowing and round the flavors out, immensely enriching the overall flavor.

Maple Syrup

Add a few drops of maple syrup to the cup if you want to give your Abuelita hot chocolate a slight pancake vibe. Wait for the hot chocolate to cool down, and add some to the cup. Don’t add the syrup while cooking the hot chocolate, and don’t add it while it is still hot.

Whipped Cream

Add a nice fat scoop of whipped cream to your cup of Abuelita hot chocolate if you want the ultimate pampering experience. The sweet and creamy whipped cream will mash perfectly with the cinnamon and chocolate flavor, making it an almost decadent experience.
