Long before wellness became an aesthetic and clean eating became a trend, Gisele Bündchen was packing her children’s school lunches herself and growing vegetables in her backyard.

No drive-throughs, no processed snacks, no shortcuts. The way she built her family’s relationship with food is equal parts fascinating and, for most parents, completely unexpected.

It Started in the Garden

Gisele and her children Benjamin and Vivian are actively involved in planning and providing what ends up on their plates.

The family grows their own vegetables at home, and the kids help tend to beehives to harvest their own honey. Spinach, kale, arugula, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and squash all come straight from the garden.

Connecting children to where their food actually comes from is not a small thing. It is the whole foundation.

The 80-20 Rule That Runs the House

The family’s approach to food has been remarkably consistent. Their personal chef revealed that 80 percent of what he cooks for the family is fresh, organic vegetables alongside whole grains and beans, with the remaining 20 percent being lean meats and wild fish. The children eat the same food as their parents the vast majority of the time.

Nothing made with white sugar, white flour, gluten, or MSG comes through the door. That is not a cheat day rule. That is simply the household standard.

The Acai Ice Cream Trick

Getting children excited about nutrient-dense food takes creativity, and Gisele has that in abundance. She passes off acai blended with berries and banana as ice cream, and the kids love it.

Breakfast rotates between scrambled eggs with avocado on gluten-free toast, coconut yogurt, and gluten-free pancakes, keeping things varied enough that eating well never feels like a punishment.

The genius is in the framing. Healthy food dressed up as a treat is still healthy food.

What the Kids Actually Snack On

Gisele told The Kitchn that her kids are currently obsessed with a homemade version of Jell-O she makes from scratch using tart cherry juice and organic gelatin. Granola is another staple she always keeps on hand for them to grab on the go. Quick, real, made with actual ingredients.

She also stays away from processed foods and sugar personally, and that philosophy flows naturally into what her children reach for between meals.

The Cookbook That Made It Official

In her New York Times bestselling cookbook ‘Nourish,’ Gisele included dedicated tips for making every recipe kid-friendly, from acai bowls and banana ice cream to chicken meatballs and pizza night. Yes, pizza night is in there, because flexibility is part of the whole point.

She told The Kitchn that the inspiration for the book came from her own mother, who fed a big family nutritious meals while working full time, using meal planning as her secret weapon. Gisele simply passed that lesson down to the next generation.

The most interesting part of how Gisele raised her kids around food is what she did not do.

She did not lecture, restrict, or make healthy eating feel like a consequence. She just made real food the only option, made it taste good, and let the garden do the rest.
