Do You Have to Be 21 to Buy Margarita Mix
Share on:

Margarita mix is a refreshing, slightly sweet, and citrusy drink. You can have it as it is, but it is intended for margaritas, delightfully fruity, and tequila cocktails. You sure have to be 21 to drink margaritas, but do you have to be 21 to buy a margarita mix?

Store-bought margarita mix doesn’t contain alcohol, so even if you are not 21 yet, you are legally allowed to buy it. If the margarita mix contains alcohol, you mustn’t buy it if you are under 21.

Drinking margaritas on a sunny afternoon and partying by some pool is an ageless pleasure, but it is a young person’s game. However, the fun can easily turn into a worrisome experience unless you are of legal drinking age. So, in the following paragraphs, I will explain how old you have to be to buy margarita mix and margaritas or whether there are any legal age requirements to drink a mocktail.

How Old Do You Have to Be to Buy Margarita Mix?

You do not need to be 21 to buy a margarita mix that doesn’t contain alcohol. It is a non-alcoholic juice-like mixture with fruity and citrusy flavors. The margarita mix is delightfully sweetened and balances out the acidity and sweetness of the drink very nicely.

Still, a margarita mix is intended for a margarita. Therefore, there are some margarita mixes that contain small amounts of alcohol, such as triple sec or tequila. Some tequila mixes, the fancier ones, contain Cointreau, which is a liqueur.

Those margarita mixes that contain alcohol usually contain small amounts, as they assume that the consumer will add more should they want to. However, here is where it gets tricky. The amount of alcohol is stated on the label, and some consider a small amount of alcohol to be equal to no alcohol.

If you are under 21, you are only allowed to buy margarita mixes with absolutely no alcohol. However, each state has its own sub-regulation for this requirement. So, depending on where you are, you may be able to buy alcoholic margarita mix if you are under 21, but not if you are under 18, and even then, you need to have an adult present.

Furthermore, most states allow for a person between the ages of 18 and 21 to drink beer or wine, but not a hard liqueur. [1]

So, in summation, although you need to be 21 to buy an alcoholic margarita mix, depending on the state, you may be allowed to do so below the age of 21 if there is an adult present. Also, depending on the alcohol percentage in the margarita mix, you may not be able to buy it even with an adult around if the percentage is over 3%.

As for non-alcoholic margarita mixes, you are legally allowed to buy them at any age.

How Old Do You Have to Be to Buy Margaritas?

To buy margaritas, you absolutely must be at least 21, and there is no grey zone about this. [2] The margarita is a cocktail containing triple sec and tequila. You know what tequila is, it is a fiery Mexican alcoholic drink.

Triple sec is a vodka-based, citrus-flavored liqueur. So, a margarita contains two kinds of hard liqueur, and you cannot buy it if you are under 21. Although the minimum legal drinking age regulation has some gaps, you can pull through; when it comes to tequila and like, there is absolutely no wiggle room.

Margaritas and margarita mixes aren’t the same. While you can buy a non-alcoholic margarita mix or a low-alcohol margarita mix, a ready margarita has far more alcohol than a low-alcohol margarita mix.

Do You Have to Be 21 to Order a Mocktail?

You don’t have to be 21 to order a mocktail, as it is a non-alcoholic drink.

A mocktail is a cocktail that contains no alcohol. It is served in the same way, usually decorated more lushly, more colorful than a regular cocktail, and incomparably more flavourful. It is usually a mixture of juices, sodas, extracts, and fresh fruits.

The word “mocktail” comes from the verb “to mock” and the second part of “cocktail”- i.e., the “tail,” so the name itself tells you that it is a drink mocking cocktails, as it looks like a cocktail, but doesn’t contain any alcohol.
