They both promise results. They work very differently. And one of them has significantly more science behind it when it comes to your face.

What Bone Broth Actually Contains

Bone broth is what happens when you simmer animal bones for a very long time, slowly coaxing out everything locked inside them. The result is a liquid rich in collagen, gelatin, amino acids like glycine and proline, hyaluronic acid, glucosamine, chondroitin, and minerals including calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

Think of it as a whole-food source of everything your connective tissue is made from. Hyaluronic acid helps skin hold onto moisture and retain its plumpness, while glucosamine stimulates the body’s own production of hyaluronic acid. Glycine, which makes up roughly one third of all collagen by weight, is essential for building new collagen from within.

The Problem With Bone Broth and Bioavailability

Here is where things get complicated. The collagen in bone broth is a large protein that is not easily absorbed and used by the body in the way the collagen in supplements can be. The molecules are largely intact and need significant digestive work before the body can access them.

Bone broth manufacturers argue that because their product is not hydrolyzed, it retains key components like glycosaminoglycans and the collagen-building amino acids glycine and proline, which can be lost during the hydrolyzation process used to make peptide supplements. Both sides have a point, which is why the debate has not fully resolved.

What Collagen Peptides Do Differently

Type I and Type III collagen are the forms most relevant to skin, hair, and nails, and most high-quality collagen peptide products specify which types they contain. The dose that appears most consistently in skin research is 5 to 10 grams daily over a minimum of eight to twelve weeks.

What the Clinical Research Actually Shows

This is where collagen peptides pull decisively ahead for skin-specific goals. A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial found that participants taking collagen peptides daily for 12 weeks showed significantly improved skin hydration, reduced wrinkling, and improved elasticity compared to the placebo group.

A 2024 clinical trial published in Dermatology Research and Practice found that hydrolyzed collagen supplementation increased skin hydration by 13.8%, improved elasticity by 22.7%, and reduced wrinkle depth by 19.6% after 12 weeks compared to placebo.

Reviews covering 26 randomized controlled trials and over 1,700 subjects consistently report benefits for skin hydration and elasticity. Bone broth simply does not have this level of independent clinical evidence targeting skin outcomes.

The Case for Bone Broth Anyway

That does not mean bone broth is without value for skin. Glycine and hyaluronic acid support collagen production and skin hydration respectively, and studies show consuming bone broth raises amino acid levels in the blood which can then be used to synthesize collagen.

The skin benefits arrive as part of a broader nutritional package rather than as a targeted intervention.

Bone broth is like a whole-food multivitamin, offering minerals, electrolytes, gut-supporting amino acids, and anti-inflammatory compounds alongside its collagen content. For gut health in particular, the gelatin and glutamine in bone broth have long been valued for supporting the intestinal barrier, and healthy digestion is its own pathway to better skin.

The Ritual vs The Result

There is also something worth naming that sits outside the nutritional data entirely. Bone broth is a warm, nourishing daily ritual that people genuinely enjoy.

It is soothing to drink, satisfying in the way a good mug of something always is, and easy to make part of a morning or evening routine. The glycine in it even has calming properties.

Collagen peptides, by comparison, are a flavorless powder stirred into coffee or a smoothie. Effective, but not exactly an experience.

Some practitioners recommend both together, using bone broth for daily nourishment and collagen peptides for targeted skin support. They work through overlapping but distinct mechanisms and are generally compatible.

Which One to Choose

For purely skin-focused goals, collagen peptides are the clearer choice based on the clinical evidence available. The research on skin elasticity, hydration, and wrinkle reduction has been done on hydrolyzed collagen peptides, not on broth. If you want measurable results in a specific timeframe, peptides give you the most direct path.

If you want something that nourishes broadly, supports gut health, provides minerals, and tastes genuinely good as part of your day, bone broth offers a richer, more holistic nutrition package that no supplement quite replicates.

The honest answer, as ever, is that neither is a shortcut. Both work best when they are part of a consistent routine that includes sleep, hydration, and a diet that is not fighting the effort you are making.
