Billie Eilish never had a dramatic conversion story about going vegan, mostly because the decision was already halfway made before she could vote. The household she grew up in had been steering away from meat for years, long before plant based eating became a mainstream talking point.

The full story involves her mother, a specific soup recipe, and a choice Eilish ultimately made on her own. Here is how it actually came together.

A Household That Was Already Leaning Plant Based

Eilish’s mother, Maggie Baird, stopped eating meat decades earlier, partly out of a connection to animals and partly after learning about the environmental toll of animal agriculture. A family history of heart disease added a third reason, since her own mother died young of a heart attack.

That mix of reasons shaped the household Eilish and her brother Finneas grew up in, well before either of them became famous. Plant based meals were simply the default at home rather than something introduced later as a trend.

She Made the Final Call Herself

Eilish took the household’s habits a step further on her own terms. She has said she went fully vegan as a preteen, after learning more specifically about practices within the dairy industry.

That detail matters, since it suggests the choice was not simply inherited from her mother but something she arrived at through her own research. It has stuck ever since, without the usual back and forth some people experience with a major diet change.

The Recipes That Still Come From Home

Even with a career built around arenas and world tours, Eilish still cooks from recipes her mother taught her. Baird told PEOPLE that a spicy noodle and tofu soup remains one of Eilish’s favorite dishes to make, loaded with enough chili flakes to “heat up a room.”

Baird has said the dish has become fully Eilish’s own version at this point, adjusted well past the original recipe. It is a small detail that shows how much of her food habits still trace directly back to her mother’s kitchen.

A Family Habit That Turned Into Public Advocacy

The family’s plant based habits eventually became something bigger than their own household. Early in the pandemic, Eilish and her mother ordered meals from a vegan restaurant to send to a shelter for unhoused people in Los Angeles, a small effort that grew into Baird’s nonprofit, Support and Feed.

What started as a mother and daughter trying to help during a crisis turned into an organization that has since provided millions of plant based meals to people in need. The instinct traces back to the same household values that shaped Eilish’s diet in the first place.

None of it reads as a calculated image choice, more like a habit that started at the family table and just kept growing from there. Sometimes the most consistent thing about a celebrity’s lifestyle really did start at home.
