Long before diet culture had a name for it, Arnold Schwarzenegger already had strong opinions about what should and should not end up on a plate. Decades of stories from people who have cooked for him or worked alongside him paint a pretty consistent picture, simple food, real discipline, and almost no patience for anything fussy.

Some of it goes back to his earliest bodybuilding days, and some of it has changed more recently than fans might expect. Here is what actually shows up on his plate.

A Chef on Set, Even in the Middle of the Jungle

During the filming of Predator in the late 1980s, Schwarzenegger reportedly brought his own personal chef to the remote jungle set every single day. Producer John Davis later recalled the chef showing up daily to prepare things like smoked salmon on toast in the middle of the shoot, regardless of how far from civilization the production had traveled.

That kind of consistency, insisting on the same quality of food no matter the location, became something of a signature. Decades later, people who have cooked for him casually, including celebrity chefs at dinner parties, still describe him as someone who takes food seriously without making it complicated.

Fewer Meals, Not More Restriction

In a recent podcast conversation with chef Jose Andres, Schwarzenegger described a much simpler routine these days, eating out for breakfast, skipping lunch entirely and keeping dinner very light.

He explained that his metabolism has slowed enough that heavier meals now just translate directly into extra weight rather than fuel.

That kind of blunt, practical reasoning tracks with his general approach to fitness advice over the decades, less about trend diets and more about basic cause and effect. Fewer meals, not more complicated rules, is the actual shift.

The Old Austrian Staples Never Left

Despite moving toward a mostly plant based diet in recent years, Schwarzenegger has kept certain old school staples from his childhood in Austria firmly in rotation. He has described a cucumber salad finished with pumpkin seed oil as part of nearly every dinner, calling the oil a genuine specialty from the Austrian region where he grew up.

Vegetable soup shows up just as often, alongside protein shakes that occasionally get a splash of tequila or schnapps thrown in after a workout. It is a routine built more around personal habit than any strict modern wellness framework.

Meat Never Fully Disappeared

Even with roughly eighty percent of his meals now plant based, Schwarzenegger has been upfront that he has not given up meat entirely.

He has said he still enjoys a steak with friends or a wiener schnitzel when he is back in Austria, treating both as an occasional exception rather than a forbidden food.

That kind of flexibility fits the old school mentality running through most of his food habits, rules that bend for real life rather than rigid restriction. Discipline, in his version of it, has always left room for a schnitzel now and then.

None of it involves a dramatic secret or a trendy new supplement. It is mostly simple food, fewer meals, and a set of Austrian habits he never really let go of.
