Anne Hathaway’s (43) Cooking & Food Life Is More Relatable Than You’d Think

Anne Hathaway has played a princess, a catwoman, an Oscar-winning Fantine, and now she’s stepping back into the spotlight for ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2.’ But between all those iconic roles, one question rarely gets asked. Does this woman actually cook? And if so, what is she making?
A Dinner She Keeps Coming Back To
In a red carpet interview with Vogue, Hathaway revealed that the meal she keeps returning to is branzino with potatoes and a really good cooked green, made even better with the addition of roasted tomatoes.
It sounds like something you’d order at a breezy coastal restaurant, and yet it works on a Tuesday night. Taste of Home notes the plate follows a very Mediterranean logic, balancing a lean protein, a starch, and a vegetable in a way that feels effortless rather than calculated. Simple, elegant, repeatable. Very on-brand.
From Vegan to Fish, With a Stopover in Iceland
Getting to branzino wasn’t exactly a straight path for Hathaway. During filming of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, she ramped her existing vegetarian diet into full-on veganism, leaning on meals like miso soup, tempeh sandwiches, and Tuscan brown rice salad, as The Daily Meal reported.
Then came a turning point somewhere cold and scenic. While filming ‘Interstellar’ in Iceland, she tried a piece of fresh fish at a Michelin-starred restaurant and told Tatler that her brain felt like a computer rebooting. She just felt better the next day. That was essentially the end of her plant-based era.
Though she did briefly revisit the lifestyle for her role in ‘WeCrashed’, going fully raw vegan to embody Rebekah Neumann, as Yahoo reported. For the role. Then, presumably, back to branzino.
The Kitchen She Cooks It All In
Where does this all happen? Hathaway and her husband, jewelry designer Adam Shulman, designed their California cabin retreat with a kitchen inspired by the German concept of gemütlich, meaning cheerful coziness, complete with pine cladding, open shelves, and a large range cooker, according to Homes & Gardens.
Their interior designer, Pamela Shamshiri, described it as one of her favorite rooms in the house, with a beautiful view to match. It’s not the kitchen of someone who never uses it. It’s the kitchen of someone who actually wants to be there.
The Dessert Department Is a Whole Other Story
If Anne Hathaway is quietly competent in the savory department, she is openly, enthusiastically obsessed in the sweet one. She told Stephen Colbert in 2022 that she has blown past 10,000 hours in the art of dessert, covering ordering, making, and tasting.
On ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’, she also shared her now-famous cupcake hack, tearing the cupcake in half horizontally and flipping the top so the frosting is sandwiched between two layers of cake, making the whole thing feel more like an hors d’oeuvre, as Yahoo Entertainment covered.
That logic, frankly, is unassailable. Anne Hathaway may not be hosting dinner parties every weekend, but she knows exactly what she’s doing in a kitchen. And she definitely knows what she’s doing after dinner.
