The One “Heavy” Food Nicole Kidman (59) Refuses to Cut From Her Diet to Stay Lean

Hollywood is full of stars who swear off entire food groups the moment a big role or red carpet comes along. Carbs usually go first, followed closely by anything rich, cheesy, or sweet.
Nicole Kidman has never really played by those rules. The Oscar winner has stayed lean and strong for decades while openly admitting to a love for one comforting staple that many dieters treat as the enemy.
The Food She Won’t Give Up: Bread
Kidman’s favorite food isn’t a trendy superfood or a carefully portioned salad. When asked during a Vogue “73 Questions” video, she named homemade warm bread with Parmigiano-Reggiano as her favorite.
It’s a refreshingly simple answer from someone who has spent years in the spotlight. Fresh bread with a bit of good cheese is the kind of food many people avoid entirely when they’re trying to stay slim.
Her Approach Is Roughly 80/20
Rather than cutting out entire categories, Kidman has described a diet that’s about 80 percent healthy and 20 percent not. That balance leaves room for the foods she loves without letting them take over.
She has also said she’ll pretty much eat anything. That flexible mindset helps explain why bread hasn’t been banished from her plate.
She Says She’s Not Strict
Kidman told the Los Angeles Times that she’s actually not that strict with her diet. Instead of rigid rules, she focuses on eating well most of the time and enjoying treats in moderation.
She has joked that she’s a much better person to cook for than a cook herself, because she loves food and will eat almost anything. Husband Keith Urban usually takes the lead in the kitchen.
Seafood Platters Are a Favorite
Kidman grew up partly in Australia, and many of her favorite foods reflect that. She has named a fresh seafood platter, with Sydney rock oysters, tiger prawns, mud crab, and lobster, as one of her ideal meals.
Seafood brings plenty of lean protein along with healthy fats. It pairs naturally with the kind of crusty bread she enjoys.
She Loves an Aussie Sausage Sizzle
Another homeland favorite is the classic Australian sausage sizzle. It’s a barbecued sausage served on a slice of plain white bread, often topped with grilled onions and sauce.
It’s hardly a typical red-carpet diet food. But for Kidman, it’s a nostalgic treat that fits right into her balanced approach.
Pasta Has a Place Too
Kidman has also mentioned a fondness for spaghetti alle vongole, the Italian pasta dish made with clams, garlic, olive oil, and white wine. She likes to serve it with green beans on the side.
The dish combines carbs with lean seafood and a vegetable. It’s a good example of how she keeps favorite comfort foods while still building a balanced plate.
Cheese and Cake Are Weaknesses
Kidman has been candid about other indulgences, too. In one interview, she admitted she could happily eat chocolate cake every night, but limits herself to a slice three or four nights a week.
She has also confessed a weakness for cheese. When faced with a great piece, she said she usually ends up nibbling on it anyway.
Exercise Is Built Into Her Life
Kidman grew up in a family of marathon runners, so regular movement has always felt normal to her. Over the years, she has enjoyed running, spinning, yoga, and playing sports with her family.
When she’s in the U.S., she likes morning walks and runs, while in Australia she often swims in the ocean. That steady activity helps balance out the bread, pasta, and occasional cake.
Why Bread Can Fit Into a Lean Diet
Nutrition experts generally agree that bread isn’t automatically fattening. What matters most is total calories, portion size, and what you pair it with.
Choosing whole grain or sourdough options adds fiber, which helps with fullness and steadier blood sugar. Enjoying bread alongside protein, vegetables, and healthy fats, as Kidman often does, makes it far easier to keep it in your diet for the long run.
