The Halloween Candy Everyone Is Buying This Year

Every October, a handful of surveys and ordering platforms try to answer the same basic question: what’s actually ending up in the most shopping carts and trick-or-treat bowls this year. The results usually scatter across a dozen different brands depending on who’s asking.
This year, though, multiple separate sources landed on the exact same answer without much disagreement at all.
Multiple Surveys Keep Landing on the Same Answer
A survey of more than a thousand parents from Little Sleepies found Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups ranked first among both parents and kids this year, ahead of every other name on the list. Separately, DoorDash’s own ordering data from last Halloween season told largely the same story.
That kind of agreement between an opinion survey and actual purchase data matters, since the two don’t always line up. When a parent’s stated favorite and an actual order history point to the same candy, it’s a stronger signal than either one would be alone.
It’s Beaten Everything Else for Three Years Running
According to that DoorDash data, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups ranked first in fifteen states, concentrated across the Mid-Atlantic, the Midwest, and the Pacific Northwest, marking the third consecutive year it’s held that position. Snickers and Kit Kats trailed as the next most common picks among adults specifically.
That three-year streak suggests this isn’t a one-off spike tied to a single new product or a viral moment. A candy that keeps winning across multiple Halloween seasons in a row has more going for it than simple novelty.
A New Twist on the Classic Just Hit Shelves
This year’s lineup also includes a genuinely new variation called Werewolf Tracks, which swaps in a vanilla creme coating that only partially covers the usual peanut butter filling. It’s a more significant change than past seasonal tweaks, which mostly stuck to new shapes rather than new flavors.
That kind of release tends to pull in people who already love the original but want a reason to try something slightly different without abandoning the base flavor entirely. A new twist on an already-dominant candy tends to add to its sales rather than compete against them.
It Just Survived a Lawsuit Over Its Own Packaging
Reese’s spent part of this year in the middle of a real legal dispute, after two shoppers argued that the pumpkin-shaped candy’s packaging showed a carved jack-o’-lantern face that the actual chocolate never had.
A federal judge dismissed the case in mid-September, ruling that the packaging’s own “decorating suggestion” disclaimer made clear the image was aspirational rather than a promise.
Legal drama doesn’t typically boost candy sales on its own, but it does keep a brand’s name circulating in the news cycle right as the actual shopping season begins. Reese’s ending up in headlines for reasons having nothing to do with taste didn’t seem to slow down how often it’s landing in a cart this year.
Adults and Kids Aren’t Necessarily Picking It for the Same Reason
Interestingly, the appeal doesn’t fully split along the lines people might expect. While Reese’s topped the list for both parents and kids overall, kids specifically leaned more toward Sour Patch Kids and Skittles when asked separately, while parents gravitated toward Snickers and Kit Kats as secondary picks.
That split suggests Reese’s is doing something less common for a single candy, appealing broadly across an age gap rather than skewing toward one specific demographic. A candy that works for both a parent’s own preference and their kid’s actual excitement has an unusually wide lane to sell into.
Regional Loyalty Tells a Slightly Different Story
Zooming into search trends rather than survey answers complicates the picture slightly, with Starburst leading search interest in seven states and candies like Twizzlers, Candy Corn, and Swedish Fish each topping the list in a handful of others. Reese’s dominance is real, but it isn’t universal everywhere.
That regional variation is a reminder that a single national answer can still hide a lot of local difference underneath it. Reese’s may be what’s filling the most carts overall this year, but it’s clearly not the only candy still worth stocking up on depending on where that cart happens to be.
