How Usher Maintains His Energy After Decades in the Spotlight

Usher has been performing at a physically demanding level since he was a teenager, and decades later his energy on stage hasn’t noticeably dropped. Behind that consistency is a routine that traces back to personal loss, not just a fitness plan.
A Family Tragedy Changed His Relationship With Food
Usher’s shift toward cleaner eating followed his father’s sudden death from a heart attack in 2008. That loss pushed him toward a mostly vegan, plant-heavy way of eating built around fresh fruit, oatmeal, vegetables, and whole grains.
He’s summed up the philosophy simply: “If you eat clean, you get better results.” For him, that principle became less about aesthetics and more about avoiding what he’d just watched happen to his father.
Wednesdays Are Reserved for Not Eating at All
One of the more distinctive parts of Usher’s routine is a weekly fast every Wednesday. It’s not a trend he picked up recently, it’s a tradition passed down directly from his grandmother.
“I fast on Wednesdays,” he’s said, treating it as a fixed part of his week rather than something he cycles in and out of depending on his schedule.
Nothing Touches His Stomach Before His Body Moves First
Usher doesn’t eat breakfast until after he’s done something physical or active. Mornings start instead with reflection, sometimes reading, sometimes sitting quietly in meditation.
Yoga is a near-daily practice too, which he’s said helps “activate my organs” before anything else happens. Only once his body has been engaged does he move on to actual food, usually a variation on eggs.
Coffee Gets Replaced by Something With More Bite
Rather than starting the day with coffee, Usher reaches for a hot mixture of celery juice, lemon, ginger, water, and cayenne pepper. He’s described it as a way to boost his metabolism and flush out toxins before anything else enters his system.
That small ritual sets the tone for the rest of his intentional morning. Nothing about it is complicated, it’s just consistent.
His Knees Dictate the Workout, Not Ambition
Years of performing have left Usher managing a previous meniscus injury and minor knee surgeries, which shapes nearly everything about how he trains now. His routine leans on walking, reverse walking, and specific knee activation exercises rather than heavy lifting.
Swimming and biking round out the rest of his workouts. “Weight lifting, don’t do a lot of that,” he’s said plainly, prioritizing longevity in his joints over building bulk.
A Halftime Show Meant Tightening Everything Further
Preparing for his Super Bowl halftime performance pushed his usual discipline even further. He’s described eating a strictly low-carb diet and spending the nights before “remedying” his body, on top of daily workouts.
That kind of short-term intensification, layered on top of habits he already keeps year-round, is part of why he’s been able to perform at that level well into his career. The daily routine gives him a baseline; moments like that ask for a little more on top of it.
