The Smith family has never been quiet about the messier parts of their lives, and food turned out to be no exception. What started as one uncomfortable family conversation ended up reshaping how several of them eat.

A Health Scare Started With a Vacation and a Word: “Pudgy”

Will Smith has said the whole shift began after a family vacation, when he came back having gained noticeable weight. His wife and daughter didn’t sugarcoat it, calling him “pudgy” enough times that it stuck with him.

That blunt feedback pushed him to actually look at his health rather than brush the comment off. It wasn’t a doctor’s warning that got his attention first, it was his own family.

He Started Questioning Everything He’d Been Told About His Own Body

Once he committed to changing his diet, Smith lost the weight and, more surprisingly, was able to stop taking blood pressure medication he’d relied on for close to a decade. “I was like, ‘Do I have high blood pressure, or was I eating myself into high blood pressure?'” he said.

That question reframed the whole issue for him. Rather than treating the medication as permanent, he started treating his diet as the actual variable worth adjusting.

His Son’s Diet Went the Opposite Direction

Around the same time, Jaden Smith had moved toward a strict vegan diet and wasn’t eating enough to support it. His parents said he looked visibly drained, with dark circles and an unusual grayness to his skin that worried them enough to step in.

Jaden later clarified he’d actually been eating vegetarian rather than strictly vegan, and that the bigger issue was that he’d been getting by on only one or two meals a day. Once he started eating more consistently, his family said the difference in how he looked was immediate.

The Family Brought In Real Experts, Not Just Opinions

Rather than guessing at solutions, the Smiths brought in physician Dr. Mark Hyman and nutritionist Mona Sharma to actually evaluate what was going on. Jaden underwent testing rather than the family relying on assumptions about his diet.

That step mattered because it moved the conversation away from blame and toward something more useful. The goal wasn’t proving who was right, it was figuring out what his body actually needed.

Dairy and Gluten Got Cut for a Reason

Dr. Hyman’s evaluation connected Jaden’s digestive issues to specific foods, ultimately advising him to avoid dairy and gluten going forward. That recommendation came directly from testing, not a general wellness trend the family decided to follow.

Removing those two categories specifically, rather than continuing a blanket restrictive diet, was framed as a more targeted fix than what Jaden had been doing on his own.

Every Person at the Table Eats Differently

The rest of the family didn’t all land on the same approach either. Jada Pinkett Smith has said she has a sensitive stomach and sticks to eating the same foods daily simply because her options are limited, while Willow Smith has spoken candidly about a period of irregular eating tied to how she felt about her appearance, without going into further detail.

Taken together, the family’s food rules were never really one unified plan. They were several separate corrections, each addressing a different problem, that happened to surface around the same kitchen table.
