An actress most people still associate with one iconic supernatural role from decades ago is not who anyone would automatically picture running a baking company. Sarah Michelle Gellar’s actual second career happens almost entirely in the kitchen.

What started as a simple playdate with another mom eventually turned into an entire business built around baking. Keep reading to see how it all came together.

It Started With A Disappointing Trip To The Grocery Store

The origin story traces back to something completely ordinary, a playdate between Gellar and her friend Galit Laibow. When Laibow went to buy a baking mix for the kids to use that day, she found herself choosing between mixes full of unfamiliar ingredients or organic options with a steep price tag.

That frustrating shopping trip planted the idea for something better. What began as an ordinary afternoon of baking with kids turned into the spark for an actual business.

That Frustration Turned Into An Entire Company

Gellar and Laibow eventually turned that idea into Foodstirs, a company built around organic, non GMO baking mixes made with six ingredients or fewer. The kits follow a simple dump and pour method, designed specifically to make baking approachable for parents who never felt confident doing it from scratch.

Gellar has said she wanted the company to get people thinking about where their ingredients actually come from, not just how the finished product tastes. That mission shaped everything from the sourcing of the cocoa to the wheat used in the mixes themselves.

Baking Became A Genuine Family Ritual

Beyond the business itself, baking became something Gellar leaned on deliberately as a way to connect with her own kids. She has said she has always been aware of the benefits that come from spending time together in the kitchen, from building fine motor skills to strengthening genuine family connection.

She has pointed specifically to research on Rhodes Scholars that found regular family dinners, more than income or background, was the common thread among them. That kind of evidence reinforced her instinct that cooking together mattered for reasons well beyond simply getting dinner on the table.

She Eventually Wrote Her Own Cookbook Too

That passion eventually extended into an actual cookbook, Stirring Up Fun with Food, organized around recipes tied to different months and holidays throughout the year. Cooking runs in the family too, her husband, actor Freddie Prinze Jr., has written his own cookbook as well.

Gellar has described her cooking journey as making her increasingly fearless in the kitchen over time. What started as a simple grocery store frustration has clearly grown into one of the more defining parts of her life outside acting.

So while she will always be known first for the role that made her famous, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s actual daily life looks a lot more like flour, mixing bowls and family recipes.

Sometimes the most lasting second act comes from something as ordinary as a disappointing trip to the grocery store.
