The Man Needs 5,000 Calories a Day — Here’s Exactly How Shaq Eats

At 7 feet 1 inch and somewhere in the neighborhood of 350 pounds, Shaquille O’Neal is not eating like the rest of us. The four-time NBA champion, TV analyst, DJ, and restaurant owner runs a daily caloric engine that would leave most people horizontal on the couch by noon.

So what actually goes into fueling one of the biggest men in sports history?

Breakfast Is Not Optional

Shaq starts his day with a protein-heavy breakfast that he credits with keeping him on track. In an interview with GQ Magazine, he broke down his five-meal daily routine with refreshing honesty: three turkey sausages and four or five egg whites to open the day, with orange juice on the side.

He has never had a cup of coffee in his life. Orange juice, every morning, since his years playing in Florida.

Five Meals, Fruit in Between

The full daily picture Shaq painted in that GQ sit-down is five meals spread across the day. Meal one is the egg white and turkey sausage situation. Meal two is fruit. Meal three is a protein shake with more fruit. Meal four is a light salad. And meal five, the main event, is chicken, fish, or steak.

“I eat a healthy breakfast just to hold me for the day,” he said simply.

His body requires between 5,000 and 5,500 calories per day just to function at his size, compared to the roughly 2,000 calories the average adult needs. Even on his cleanest eating days, that is a significant number to hit with egg whites and salad.

The Playing Days Were a Different Story

The current disciplined version of Shaq is a fairly recent development. During his NBA career, the pregame ritual looked very different. On his own podcast, he described eating two turkey club sandwiches, french fries, and a pineapple soda after morning shootaround, then sleeping for four hours before tip-off. It worked, apparently.

The Weight Loss Chapter

The pandemic years sent Shaq’s weight climbing past 400 pounds, and it took a blunt comment from a friend and a sobering doctor’s visit to turn things around. He told Entertainment Tonight that he started adding vegetables, supplements, and nutrition shakes to his routine, and by 2023 had dropped 55 pounds.

“I didn’t know what the difference was between a carb and a protein,” he admitted to People. “Once I just started changing those certain things, it dropped.”

His target weight is between 315 and 330 pounds.

The Cheat Meals He Will Never Fully Give Up

Here is where Shaq becomes deeply relatable. He owns a fast food chicken chain called Big Chicken, built entirely around his mother Lucille’s recipes, and he is not pretending to be above the menu. Fried chicken, mac and cheese, and burgers remain his comfort foods of choice.

He summed up his entire food philosophy for Spoon University in one sentence: “I can’t eat burgers every day or a lot of sugar, but if there’s some fried chicken and macaroni and cheese at the house, I’m eating it.”

And when he told The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that he simply does not like rich people food, preferring chicken wings over hors d’oeuvres, it was the least surprising thing he has ever said.

For a man his size, with his schedule, running businesses, doing television, DJing shows, and carrying decades of NBA wear on his joints, eating five structured meals a day while still making room for his mother’s mac and cheese might just be the most Shaq thing imaginable.
