Reese Witherspoon has the kind of glow that makes people stop and stare, and for years nobody could quite explain it. She has been asked about her skincare, her workouts, her sleep, and her general approach to staying this radiant.

The answer, as it turns out, has been sitting in her blender every single morning for over a decade, and it costs less than a cup of coffee.

The Story Starts at an Awards Show

The smoothie that changed Reese’s mornings did not come from a nutritionist or a wellness brand. It came from a conversation with Kerry Washington at an awards ceremony, years before the two would later become co-stars on ‘Little Fires Everywhere’.

Reese has recalled the moment in her own words: she was sitting next to Kerry Washington, noticed her skin was extraordinary, and asked what she was doing. Washington told her about a green smoothie she drank daily, saying it had changed her skin and made her hair and nails genuinely stronger. Reese’s response was immediate.

She was in.

The Smoothie She Has Been Drinking for Over Ten Years

On a recent episode of the podcast ‘Table Manners’, Reese confirmed she has been drinking the same green smoothie every single morning for over ten years. She says it has changed her skin, her hair, and even made her eyes look whiter.

The recipe was originally inspired by celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder’s Glowing Green Smoothie. Reese shared it on Instagram in 2020 along with the full ingredient list, which turns out to be remarkably simple and remarkably cheap.

What Actually Goes In It

The full ingredient list is two heads of romaine lettuce, half a cup of spinach, half a cup of coconut water, one whole banana, one whole apple, one whole pear, and one whole lemon. Optional add-ins include celery, almond butter, protein powder, or flaxseeds.

Reese drinks it around 10 or 11am on an empty stomach and says she does not get hungry again until around 1pm. The recipe makes two portions, so she stores half in the fridge for the next morning.

Why Nutritionists Actually Back This Up

This is not just a celebrity wellness claim that evaporates under scrutiny. Nutritionist Hannah Alderson, speaking to Hello Magazine, described the smoothie as a simple way to increase colourful fibre, hydration, and micronutrient intake first thing in the morning, supporting gut health, energy, and skin.

She noted that because it uses whole fruits and leafy greens rather than juice, it retains all the beneficial fibre. Romaine lettuce alone provides significant amounts of vitamins A and K, and spinach adds iron, folate, and a full range of B vitamins.

The one caveat Alderson flagged is that the smoothie is fairly fruit-heavy and relatively low in protein. She recommended pairing it with a hard-boiled egg or mixing in collagen powder, chia seeds, or a scoop of protein powder for better blood sugar balance and sustained energy.

It Costs Less Than $3 to Make

The ingredients for one batch of this smoothie, which makes two servings, come in at well under three dollars when bought at a standard grocery store. Romaine lettuce, spinach, a banana, an apple, a pear, and a lemon are among the most affordable items in any produce aisle.

According to one nutrition breakdown, the smoothie contains vitamins A, C, E, and K, all of which contribute to healthy skin and hair, along with vitamin B for nail strength, with no refined sugar added anywhere in the recipe.

The secret ingredient, according to Reese herself, is dancing while you make it. That part, at least, remains completely free.
