Does Melania Trump (56) Know How to Cook?

She has access to a fully staffed White House kitchen, a team of professional chefs, and can request almost anything she wants at any hour of the day. Whether she ever actually stands at a stove herself is a more complicated question.

She Has Admitted She Hasn’t Really Done It

At a 2019 town hall in Las Vegas, Fox News commentator Eric Bolling asked Melania what she would cook if she had anything at her disposal.

Her answer was disarmingly candid. She replied that she hadn’t actually done that yet, adding she had “really no time” to prepare snacks for her family when her husband comes home late. When pressed further on what the family would choose as a group meal, she paused at length before suggesting “maybe spaghetti.”

The White House Does the Cooking

During both terms in the White House, professional chefs have handled the Trump family’s daily meals. The longest-serving White House chef in history, who retired in 2024, revealed that Melania loved Italian food, so the kitchen leaned toward pasta, though lighter preparations. She described the first family as “very, very classic eaters.”

The same chef noted that behind closed doors, first families are simply regular people who want to sit down and eat together. The cooking, however, was not Melania’s domain.

What She Actually Eats at Home

Reports suggest her meals at home center around fresh produce: tomatoes, cucumbers, avocados, and leafy greens. Her mornings begin with a smoothie packed with spinach, blueberries, carrots, lemon juice, and olive oil. On busier days she swaps it for porridge.

She eats at least seven pieces of fruit daily and avoids onions and artichokes entirely. She has also made clear she does not eat raw fish, something she stated outright in her 2024 memoir after a state visit to Japan.

Her Slovenian Roots Play a Role

Melania grew up in Sevnica, Slovenia, where home cooking was a cultural cornerstone. Reports suggest she has occasionally cooked traditional Slovenian dishes from her childhood, and she is described as comfortable cooking for her family, even if she does not do so regularly.

Whether those Slovenian recipes have made it into the White House kitchen is unclear. What is clear is that when she wants something cooked, there are people whose entire job it is to make that happen.

She Eats Well. She Just Doesn’t Cook Much.

Melania’s relationship with food is that of someone who cares deeply about what goes into her body but has very little need, and apparently very little time, to prepare it herself.

She is known to actively push back on her husband’s fast food habits, encouraging him toward lean protein, salad, and vegetables. She keeps her own diet disciplined, health-forward, and rooted in whole foods.

She just lets someone else do the actual cooking.
