The answer, it turns out, is less about a secret product and more about a remarkably consistent set of habits she has been building and refining for most of her adult life.

The Green Juice That Started Everything

Every morning begins the same way. A homemade green juice made with kale, celery, parsley, and green peppers is her first act of the day, and it has been for years. Her daughter Kate Hudson confirmed in an interview that their mother had been drinking green juice before it was fashionable, describing it as essentially the foundation of how they grew up eating.

The rest of the day follows a philosophy of simplicity and restraint. Her diet is wheat-free, sugar-free, and dairy-free, with meals kept deliberately uncomplicated, typically greens, fish, lentils, and vegetables eaten without much mixing or fuss.

The Eating Philosophy Nobody Else Is Talking About

Hawn has said she believes most people simply eat too much, and that keeping portions modest and meals simple is central to how she maintains her energy and figure. Telling PEOPLE that she does not put a lot of food in her stomach and does not mix too many things together, she described the approach as less about restriction and more about clarity.

Her indulgence, when it comes, is truffle fries. Which, honestly, seems about right for someone who has earned the right to enjoy something delicious without apologizing for it.

The Workout That Looks Like Play

Her exercise routine leans heavily into movement that feels enjoyable rather than punishing. A mini trampoline is a regular fixture, which she credits for its benefits to the lymph system, and she bounces on it with arms raised to involve the heart at the same time.

Walking is another cornerstone, with a twist. She walks both forward and backward, explaining that walking backward engages a different part of the brain entirely, which she finds remarkable for mental sharpness as well as physical fitness. On shorter days, she does fifteen-minute interval sessions rather than skipping movement altogether.

The Habit That May Matter Most

Hawn began meditating in 1972, more than fifty years ago, after experiencing anxiety and panic attacks early in her career. She has described what happened during that first session as a reconnection with a joy she thought she had lost, a feeling that set the course for everything that followed.

That experience eventually led her to found MindUP, a preventative mental health program now used in schools around the world, built on the science of how mindfulness affects the brain. She starts each morning with deep breathing, stretching, and gratitude before anything else enters the day.

The happiness piece, for Hawn, is not separate from the health piece. It is the same thing, pursued through the same daily choices, one green juice and one quiet morning at a time.
