Domino’s Hearty Marinara Sauce vs. Robust Tomato: Differences

Domino's Hearty Marinara Sauce vs. Robust Tomato Differences
Share on:

As a lifelong pizza enthusiast, I am always excited to see Domino’s introduce some new sauce options. Their Hearty Marinara and Robust Tomato sauces caught my eye, so I decided to determine how different they really are. I’m always searching for new and improved ways to elevate my pizza experience at home. As much as I love the classic red sauce, I appreciate companies innovating and giving customers more choices.

Robust Tomato has a richer, more complex flavor and thicker consistency, which stands up better to heavier pasta dishes and meats. The Hearty Marinara is lighter, brighter, and more versatile, working well as a dipping sauce or on pizza.

The ingredients alone make the Marinara and Tomato sauces seem similar. But after diving in and doing a side-by-side comparison, there are some distinct differences in taste, texture, and potential uses. Here’s the scoop on how Domino’s two new premium pizza sauces stack up.

Ingredients and Preparation Analysis

When craving pizza, I always have difficulty choosing between Domino’s Hearty Marinara sauce and their Robust Tomato sauce. Both are tasty, but some critical differences in ingredients and flavor are good to know before you order.

The Hearty Marinara sauce has common Italian herbs like basil, oregano, garlic, and onion, giving it an authentic marinara flavor. The ingredients are slowly simmered for a rich, robust flavor.

The Robust Tomato sauce is made from tomato puree, crushed tomatoes, paste, and water. It has similar herbs, but the lemon juice adds a bright kick of acidity. Moreover, it has a shorter cook time, so it has a fresher, tangier taste from the tomatoes shining through.

Here’s what the process looks like on the spot:

Appearance and Taste

Regarding appearance, Domino’s Hearty Marinara and Robust Tomato sauces are quite different.

The Hearty Marinara has a deep red color bordering brown, with visible herbs and spices. You can see bits of oregano, basil, thyme, and garlic. It looks homemade and rustic. The Robust Tomato, on the other hand, has a bright red-orange hue like a classic pizza sauce. It’s smooth and uniform, without any chunks or flecks.

In terms of taste, the Hearty Marinara is bright, acidic, and herbaceous with a chunky, homemade texture. The Robust Tomato is thick, creamy, and full-bodied with a smooth, uniform texture.

The Hearty Marinara pools on top with its thick, chunky texture, while the Robust Tomato blends smoothly into the cheese. Bite into a slice, and the Hearty Marinara has visible herbs in every bite, unlike the uniform Robust Tomato.

Overall, while I enjoy both sauces, I tend to prefer the rustic, homemade quality of the Hearty Marinara. The Robust Tomato is a bit too processed and sugary for me. But whether you like a smooth, vibrant sauce or a thick, herb-studded one, Domino’s has you covered. The choice comes down to personal taste – there’s no wrong option here!

I tend to think of the Hearty Marinara as a “lighter” sauce and the Robust Tomato as a “heartier” one, as the names would suggest.

Consistency and Texture

When I think about Domino’s sauces, the first thing that comes to mind is how thick and robust they are. The Hearty Marinara and Robust Tomato sauces are pretty dense in consistency, ideal for topping pizzas and pasta.

The Hearty Marinara sauce has a thick, chunky texture. Each spoonful contains hearty tomato chunks that provide little bursts of tomatoey goodness. Despite the thickness, the sauce is smooth and velvety from being simmered for hours. The olive oil and basil give it an aromatic, herb-infused flavor that permeates the sauce.

Like the Hearty Marinara, the Robust Tomato sauce has a very thick and chunky consistency, almost like tomato puree. However, the Robust Tomato sauce tends to be slightly thicker, with a looser, soupier texture. Made from sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, and olive oil, the Robust Tomato sauce has an intense, concentrated tomato flavor from the sun-dried tomatoes. The garlic and olive oil provide a savory undertone.

The Hearty Marinara sauce is better for pasta dishes where you want the sauce to coat the pasta thoroughly without being too heavy. The looser consistency allows it to mix into pasta more easily.

The Robust Tomato is ideal as a pizza sauce since it has a thicker, heartier texture that won’t make the crust soggy. It also works well for topping chicken parmesan or eggplant parmesan.

Uses

Domino's Hearty Marinara Sauce on Pizza Dough vs. Robust Tomato on Pizza Dough

Use the Hearty Marinara sauce for a simple but zesty tomato flavor on pasta, pizza, or subs. It works well with meatballs, sausage, and vegetables.

Choose the Robust Tomato sauce when you’re craving a heartier, full-flavored sauce. It stands up well to substantial toppings like extra cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms, etc. The chunky texture is ideal for dipping breadsticks, garlic bread, and similar sides.

For homemade pizza, the Hearty Marinara makes a great base sauce, but it could be too thin. Top it with your favorite fresh or grilled veggies. The Robust Tomato sauce, with its blend of herbs and spices, pairs better with meat-based pizzas.

Both sauces work for pasta dishes, but I prefer the Hearty Marinara for spaghetti and ziti, while the Robust Tomato is ideal for baked ziti, lasagna, or eggplant parmesan.

In the end, while Domino’s Hearty Marinara and Robust Tomato sauces share some similarities, their differences in preparation, taste, and texture make each better suited for particular uses. Choosing the proper sauce for your meal can make a big difference in flavor and enjoyment!

Marinara vs. Robust Tomato: Which Domino’s Sauce Is Better?

Regarding Domino’s sauces, I’m always torn between the Hearty Marinara and the Robust Tomato. Both are delicious, but each has distinct qualities that set them apart. After many deliveries and lots of taste testing, I’ve determined some key differences to help you decide which reigns supreme.

The Hearty Marinara is made from vine-ripened tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, herbs, and spices. It has a fresher, homemade taste. The Robust Tomato, on the other hand, is thicker and chunkier.

The Marinara has a lighter, tangier taste from the fresh tomatoes, while the Tomato is heartier and richer from the sun-dried tomatoes and parmesan. The Marinara is thinner and smoother, while the Tomato is thick and chunky. Looks-wise, the Marinara is a bright red, and the Tomato is a darker, rusty red.

As mentioned, the Marinara has a looser, flowing consistency, perfect for dipping breadsticks or garlic knots. The Tomato is thick and spoonable, almost like a tomato stew, ideal for topping meats, pastas, and pizzas.

I prefer the Marinara for dipping veggies, breadsticks, and pasta. The Tomato is my go-to for chicken parmesan, meatball subs, and pizza – the robust, cheesy flavor of the Tomato pairs better with heartier toppings and fillings.

At the end of the day, I can’t choose an absolute winner. It comes down to what I’m in the mood for – a lighter, fresher tomato sauce or a heartier, chunky tomato topping. Luckily, Domino’s lets you add either sauce to your pizza or pasta for no extra charge, so you can try both and see which you prefer.

The great thing is, with these two tasty sauces, you really can’t go wrong!
