What to Serve with Cauliflower Puree? + Recipe for Creamy Cauliflower Puree
Cauliflower puree is a great, low-calorie option for those looking to cut back on carbs. But it’s also so delicious that you would choose it over others even if you didn’t need a healthier version. Creamy and comforting, this healthy version of puree tastes remarkably like mashed potatoes. It’s also super versatile and can be eaten in many different ways. You can serve it as a side dish, add it to other dishes, or even use it as a base for your own recipes.
Cauliflower mash pairs well with boiled or roasted vegetables, scallops, sausages, stuffed mushrooms, crab salad, sweet potatoes, caramelized onions, roasted chicken, or turkey, or you can go wild and substitute the rice in the chicken and shrimp teriyaki pineapple bowl with it.
I’ve got some ideas for what to serve with your cauliflower mash, so you can make it even more delicious! The ever-so-versatile cauliflower belongs in the same family as broccoli, kale, bok choy, and Brussels sprouts, but it is the one from the group that substitutes potatoes perfectly, at least when it comes to purees. Here’s what to serve with cauliflower puree.
What to Serve with Cauliflower Mash?
Cauliflower is a versatile vegetable that can be served in various ways, and mashed cauliflower is a delicious way to incorporate more vegetables into your diet. If you’re looking for something to serve with your cauliflower puree, I’ve got a few suggestions:
Steamed or Roasted Veggies
If you have some leftovers, you can use vegetables belonging to the same group as cauliflower, as well as beetroot, carrot, or whichever you like, and make yourself a delicious vegetarian meal. What’s more, health enthusiasts will find this an excellent addition to their meal routine that’s suitable for lunch and dinner.
Simply saute the veggies in a bit of olive oil, or even choose to roast them and get that smoky flavor.
Scallops
Scallops are many people’s favorite way to eat seafood because they require little preparation and cook incredibly quickly. Make sure you’ve some buttery-scented scallops, then fry them for a few minutes and add them to your puree.
You can also add some roasted garlic or asparagus to make a delicious and light dinner.
Sausages
If you are a meat lover but you also want to add some veggies to your diet, you are constantly in search of that balance. Well, cauliflower mash and sausages make for one fantastic combo. Brown your sausage in a pan first before serving them on top of the puree, and you’ve got a delicious lunch.
Stuffed Mushrooms
You can easily make these yourself by stuffing mushroom caps with things like spinach or cottage cheese and baking them until they’re tender on the inside. Then just serve them over cauliflower puree!
Another way is to make a tasty low-carb appetizer by filling the caps with the cauliflower mash and roasting them together. Just mix some cauliflower puree, a couple of egg yolks, and heavy cream, season them and stuff the mushroom caps.
Crab Salad
By bringing together salad and seafood, a crab salad already represents a perfect combination of a healthy meal that involves lots of veggies, crab meat, and a voluptuous mayo dressing. Add it as a side dish to your cauliflower puree, and you will enjoy a fantastic mix of creaminess.
Sweet Potatoes
While you managed to avoid potatoes for the puree, you can add some as a side dish. With their subtle sweet taste, roasted sweet potatoes make an excellent combo with cauliflower puree.
Furthermore, the preparation is super fast, so you can choose this combo whenever you don’t have much time to cook. Just slice them equally, season them with oil, put them on baking paper, and roast them in the oven.
Caramelized Onions
As cauliflower does not have a strong flavor, pairing it with caramelized onions full of a powerful aroma is a good combination.
These crispy onions are easy to prepare. Just add them with some butter and olive oil to a cast iron pan and saute over medium heat for 20 minutes.
Roasted Chicken or Turkey
As much as chicken or turkey meat is delicious on its own, we usually pair them with some side dish, including veggies and purees, so why not try them with cauliflower mash as well? What’s great is that you can have this combo for lunch or dinner.
Moreover, it is pretty nutritious as chicken and turkey provide proteins, while cauliflower contains vitamin C and fiber. [1]
Chicken & Shrimp Teriyaki Pineapple Bowl
If you want to try something more exotic, this bowl is the right choice. As we have seen, it is easily prepared. Even though it can be eaten initially with boiled rice, why not enjoy this healthy version of a puree and enjoy the explosion of tastes? Chicken breasts, shrimp, teriyaki sauce, pineapple, and creamy puree. What’s not to like?
How to Make Creamy Cauliflower Puree?
Cauliflower puree is an easy way to add veggies to your diet without having to cook them separately and mix them with other foods later. Now that we’ve seen the variety of options you have to serve with cauliflower mash let’s take a look at how to prepare this super healthy but also delicious puree.
Have I mentioned it is super easy as well? You need only a few ingredients, including one cauliflower, some butter, salt, and sour cream or Crème Fraiche.
Here’s how you can make creamy cauliflower puree:
1. Put the cauliflower in a saucepan and cover it with water. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Cook for 25 minutes (from the time when the water starts boiling) or until the cauliflower is soft. Drain well, pressing out any excess water.
2. Put the cooked cauliflower into a food processor or blender with 1 tablespoon of butter, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 2 tablespoons of sour cream or creme fraiche. Pulse until smooth and creamy—you may need to scrape down the sides of your machine as you move along.
How to Store Creamy Cauliflower Puree?
Cauliflower puree should be stored in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator to keep it fresh for about five days.
To extend its shelf life, you can freeze cauliflower mash. Simply divide it into portions, place them inside airtight freezer bags or containers, and keep them for three months.
